James Byrnes, (May 1842 Dublin Ireland) and Mary Delahunty Byrnes (baptized 14 Nov 1843)

are the parents of Catherine Byrnes Farrell, my great grandmother, born 1865 in Cloghasty, Graigue, Kilkenny.  She emigrated to America about 1882 and died 1939 in Brooklyn, New York City.  I created an Ancestor page for Catherine on Ireland X0 with more information. I know that there are many Delahantys that stayed in Ireland, and some that settled in Cleveland, Ohio. The parents of Mary Delahunty Byrnes are Edward Delahunty (1801-1867) and Mary Phelan (1805-1867), also from the townland of Cloghasty.

My mother's cousin Eleanor, is 93 and lives in New York. She helps me with our family history. We've been able to find information on ancestors, but recently she asked me if there were any relatives still living in that townland or nearby. There must be, so I told her I would check on it. Does the townland of Cloghastia still exist? Thanks for having a look.

  • Mary:

Here is the 1901 census for Cloghasty North townland which shows six households. There are no Byrnes households

I think the surname you would want to research would be O'Neill. In 1868 Bridget Delahunty daughter of Edward Delahunty married James Neill. James died before 1901 and if you look at house 5, I believe that is Bridget Delahunty O'Neill and her children.

In the 1911 census, Bridget and children plus grandchildren are in house 2

I did not find a definitive death record for Bridget O'Neill. I found a 76 year old Bridget dying in 1924. See fourth record at the link She was married and the informant was a John O'Neill. So unless she married the brother of James then this is the wrong Bridget.

  • Hi Patricia and Roger,

My cousin will be very pleased to hear this news. I never thought to look for the O'Neill/Delahanty family. Now I have the information for Cloghasty, which is the exact location for my relatives in 1865.

    Many thanks!
