CrSurFa's picture

Reverse Genealogy Project

Seeking origins, descendants, or researchers, of the migrants from Ireland who settled in Amherst county Virginia before 1850.

Many of these appear to be working class, transitional Labor for a (local?) Canal, whose location(s) has yet to be determined; a few were Stone Masons perhaps for the same canal(s); and a Boatman is also mentioned (perhaps for the same canal(s) or one of the many river travelways in rural Amherst county).

Brotherton is a rare name in Ireland.  I am looking for information about Robert Brotherton b. 1796 and his wife Anne b. 1799 in Ireland.  They came to New York on the Ship Ocean in 1846 with 7 of their 9 children.

maria.smyth's picture

My great uncle William Joseph Hennessy ( also written in Ireland as Hensey) was born February 12th 1872. He was was born in Knocknagad County Laois, which is close to Camross and the larger town of Mountrath. His birth was registered in Mountmellick. His parents were Patrick Hennessy and Eliza Dunphy. He was the eldest son and the second of 8 siblings.

He emigrated to the USA probably somewhere around 1895 when his father died at the asge of 50.

I had been told that he emigrated to Chicago but, a visit to the Newberry Library there last year produced no results.

I am looking for Irish Donegans who may have had a Y dna test. Or may have stories of ancestors

going to America many years ago. My family has been in the US since the early 1700s and maybe the

late 1600s. My earliest genealogically proven record is the birth of my great great grandfather in 1812 in

North Carolina.      Here is my story: Much like the Irish historians who past down their history verbally,
