Peter Madden born 1832Kilkerrin ,Galway

sylvia'smother's picture

iam looking for any further info on my gr gr Grandfather Peter Madden and his family he left behind in Ireland when he came to New Zealand.

This is what i know.He was born in Kilkerrin Galway in 1832(ish).On his death cert his parents are listed as Thomas Madden and Bridget Ford.He died in Napier , New Zealand in 1920.

He Married Bridget Ann O'flarhety in 20/10/1859 in the Church of Annuncition in Clarenbridge , County , Galway. Her parents were Patrick O'Flarhety and Mary Larkin (have conflicting info that her madien name was Conway)

I think they went on to live in Roveagh(?)

When they left Ireland for New Zealand on Nov 2nd 1879 they had 3 children with them.

Mary madden 26/8/1860 .baptised St Colmans Church Rouvehagh (?) Clarenbridge , Parish of Clarenbridge Diocese of Kilmacduagh , County Galway.

Thomas Madden 21/12/1863  baptised as above

Patrick Joeseph Madden 10/03/1867 baptised as above (this was my gr grandfather)

I think that Peter madden had a brother William Madden married to Mary Fahy. They had children Patrick , Margaret , Mary , John , Cathrine , William. And i also beleive that they to lived in Roveagh.

Any info on Peter maddens parents and his siblings and their desendants would be great!

Hi there,

Roveagh and Roevehagh are both located very close to Clarinbridge and Kilgolgan in County Galway.

Unfortunately, the baptismal Roman Catholic church records for Kilkerrin only begin in 1892.

Peter's parents might be listed in the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Perhaps there might be a mention in the later records called Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com

Clarenbridge RC church marriage records date from 1837. These can be accessed in the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2442, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0979690. The baptismal records date from 1854. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest of the area.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

Kind regards,

Sinead Cooney

Dear Friend,

To add to what Sinead has said, there are Maddens still in the Roveagh area. They live in the townland of Dunkellin. I looked up the 1901 census and in Dunkeelin (spelt thus) there was a William Madden aged 60. This would be Peter's brother. His name is not in the 1911 census but his son John was head of the house. He had a child called William, born 1903/4. I have asked a local historian, a neighbour of the  Maddens to let us know who would be the best of that family to know their genealogy.

You are very fortunate that the family are still there. I taught some lovely Madden  girls. For the 1901 census please look up www.census.nationalarchives.ie and then enter William Madden and the townland of Dunkeelin, as it was spelt then. The correct spelling, Dunkellin, appears in the 1911 census.

It would be lovely if you could come to the Week of Welcomes, 24th to 30th June 2012. Looking forward to meeting you,

de Lourdes Fahy (Sister).

A local historian.

Thankyou both so much for your replies!A couple of nights ago i found those census records,Fantastic! How wonderful that there is still family living in Roveagh area.Acually this news bought tears to my eyes. And would be thrilled if i can get more info from them.My madien name was madden and we are a very close family and although Peter madden died in 1919 my family always spoke of him(he was my GRGR granfather) the house he built after his arival in napier (NZ) is still standing.it was built in 1878.My own Brother is named Peter madden.I would dearly love to meet you all but New Zealand is such a long way away.Iam also searching for Patrick madden who along with his sister Bridget arived in Napier in 1883.He was the nephew of Peter madden and the son of William madden and Mary Fahy.I think he stayed in Napier , NZ for about 20yrs then went back to Ireland. He was born in 1861 in Roveagh.

Again thankyou so much for your help

Kind Regards

Dear Sandra,

I have been speaking to someone who knows the Maddens of Dunkellin quite well. The best person to contact is Sean Madden, Dunkellin, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway. The phone number is 353 91 796041. He has a brother Austin  who also lives in Dunkellin and his phone number is 353 91 796446.

They have a cousin Mary Farrell, nee Madden who lives in  Dooneen, Burren, Co. Clare. Her number is  353 65 7078009.

I'm sure they would be delighted to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Hi Sandra,

Until I get the e-mail addresses of Sean and Austin, perhaps you could contact Brian Farrell, the son of Mary Madden Farrell.  His business address is info@burrencoaches.com. He runs a bus company and has a great website. Just "google" Burren Coaches as see what comes up. Brian is a very nice young man and if you tell him that I gave you this contact it will help. In any case, he is very welcoming.

You can also find Sean Madden on the internet but he doesn't give an e-mail address.

Best of luck,

de Lourdes (Sr.)

Great to hear from you, Sylvia. I was in New Zealand in 2005. I discovered loads of cousins in Christchurch, Timaru, Waimate and Auckland. I loved it. Many of them have visited Ireland.I last year's Week of Welcomes we had Vin and Ted Glynn from Raglan. Their ancestors left Ireland for NZ in the 1870s. They were thrilled with the experience in Ireland. When I have more on the Maddens I'll contact you.All the best,de Lourdes (Sr.)

Maddens in Kilkerrin Parish

Sandra,

I see there are a smattering of Maddens (Patrick, Thomas, John and A.) listed in Griffith's Valuations from Kilkerrin Parish. I'm not sure if this link is static or dynamic, but here's where I found them:

Madden cousins in Timicat?

I'm from the U.S. and have done extensive research with my extended family here on the Maddens from Timicat, Kilkerrin, Galway - perhaps cousins of your New Zealand branch.  We know of three brothers: Patrick (b. 1802 Timicat, Kilkerrin, d. UNK Ireland); Michael (b. 1804 Timicat, Kilkerrin d. 13 Jan 1881 Portage, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA); and Martin (b. 1808 Timicat, Kilkerrin, d. 29 Aug 1892 Leavenworth, Kansas, USA).

Patrick married an unknown woman and had at least 3 boys: Martin (b. abt 1831 Timicat, Kilkerrin); James (b. abt 1835 Timicat, Kilkerrin); and twin Thomas (b. abt 1835 Timicat, Kilkerrin).

Michael (my 4th great grandfather) married Mary Kane (b. abt 1805 Galway, d. 26 May 1877 Portage, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA).  They immigrated to the U.S. in 1847.  Mary had a brother James Kane (b. abt 1820 Galway) who later followed her and Michael and lived in the same town in the 1850 Census in Wisconsin.  Michael and Mary had the following children: Michael (b. abt 1834 Timicat d. 1847 at sea ert US); Martin Delaney (my line) (b. 1 Nov 1836 Timicat d. 11 Apr 1924 Clinton, Lyons, Iowa, USA); Bridget (b. May 1837 Timicat, d. 25 Aug 1906 Mortello, Marquette, Wisconsin, USA m. 1853 William Rabbit); John H (b. 25 Aug 1839 Timicat, d. 26 Apr 1906 Buffalo, Marquette, Wisconsin, USA); James (b. May 1844 Timicat, d. 4 Dec 1914 Portage, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA); Malachi Kane (b. 7 Dec 1844 Timicat, d. 1925 Lyons, Clinton, Iowa, USA); twin Thomas (7 Dec 1844 Timicat, d. bef 1930 Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA); Maria (b. abt 1852 Wisconsin, USA m. 15 Feb 1877 Charles Cook d. abt 1887 USA); and Michael (b. Apr 1855 Wisconsin, USA)  Family lore says that the Kanes were well off farmers and were not greatly impacted by the famine and that Mary Kane's brothers pleaded with her and her family to stay in Galway, but they decided to immigrate anyway.

Martin (b. 1808 Timicat, Kilkerrin d. 29 Aug 1892 Leavenworth, Kansas, USA) married abt 1837  Mary Pettit (b. abt 1815 Ireland, d. 23 Nov 1895 Leavenworth, Kansas, USA) immigrated to the U.S. 17 May 1851 arriving at the port of Mobile, Alabama.  Children Matthew (b. 22 Aug 1838 Timicat d. 27 Feb 1912 Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, USA); John Paul (b. 5 Feb 1842 Timicat d. 11 Apr 1928 Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, USA); and Patrick Henry (b. 22 Feb 1843 Timicat, d. 11 Jan 1913 Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, USA)

I have lots of pictures and Michael's and Martin's branches from extended relatives.  Nothing on Patrick who we presume stayed in Ireland. We also don't know about other members of that family or their parents names.

I'm visiting Ireland May 2013 and plan to be near Tuam May 27-28 and would love to see if there is a connection to the New Zealand Maddens and/or Maddens in Kilkerrin parish today.

Mandy
