Looking for information

sben1951's picture

Hello, I am looking for my great grandmother born Feb 28, 1876 (I think) in Dunmore? Her name was Delia Raftery and she came to America in 1899. The ship manifest said she was from Dunmore. The reason I think this pasenger was her is that I have her marriage certificate and it lists the same address in Philadelphia, PA that is listed on her marriage certificate. Delia always said she was from "Bluebells" in Ireland. I've searched the "Bluebells" connection and it seems to fit with the Dunmore area, although I've never found any information that the area was known as Blubells. I don't know if she was referring to a town or an area per se. I do not have her parent's names but know she had a brother Thomas and a sister Mary, both of whom ended up in Philadelphia, PA. Family lore has it that she and her sister worked for a wealthy Philadelphia family and that one of them was the upstairs maid, the other the downstairs maid. She married Charles Fricker, of Philadelphia in 1904 and had a daughter Helen (died as a child) and my grandfather Charles Eugene Fricker in 1907. Per profession is listed as "cook". She died in Rochester NY in August 1959. I can find no other information on Delia beyond US census information. Does anyone have any information which might help me trace her back to her home in Ireland? Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Sharon Benedict

Sharon: I looked for a birth

Sharon:

I looked for a birth index record for Delia or Bridget Raftery with no success. I then looked at Raftery records in the 1901 census for Dunmore ciivl parish and found one record in Cluid townland which might be a possibility. A son Thomas is listed and if Delia's brother Thomas emigrated agter 3/31/1901 this may be the correct family. Let me know if you have further questions. Are her parents listed on the 1959 death record?

What is the "Blue Bells"

What is the "Blue Bells" connection.  I have some people in Dunmore, and if you can give me more, I will contact them.

Hi Roger,

I had another response today and think possibly that my g-grandmother might have been saying "Bellwell" rather than "Bluebells". Gaelic was her first language and she learned English after coming to the US but her brogue was very heavy and now I'm wondering if they misunderstood her? The gentleman that wrote me yesterday did some investigatory work and found that there were Rafterys in Bellwell, Dunmore. He  put me in touch with a lady in Dunmore who knew of the Rafterys so we'll see what comes of that.

To answer your question, I'm not sure when Thomas may have emigrated and there was no information listed on her death record that was of any help. Where is Cluid?

Thanks, Sharon

Sharon:

I checked my OS map of the area around Dunmore. Cluid townland is about 3 miles due east of Dumore Town although a drive might take 4-5 miles based on the roads. The townland immediately to the north is Bellwell. So I think you are in the right area and I'm pretty confident that the Daniel Raftery family may be Delia's.

Hi Roger,

Any ideas about where to check next if I think that Daniel Raftery may be her father? Could there be parish records to check? if so, do you know which church? And do you know the cemetaries in the area if any of those records are online?  Thanks for all your help...

It might be better to wait for the local folks in Ireland to see what they can tell you about Church records. Like you, I live in the USA. I do know that the Mormon Church microfilmed the RC records for Dunmore. Unfortunately, there is a gap from 1860-1877 for baptisms. Here is the link to the film description and number.
