Local Historian - John-Joe Conwell
John-Joe is our fountain of knowledge when it comes to local history around our area. Indeed, such is his wealth of knowledge that he is also the Parish Liason Officer for Ireland Reaching Out and has been a member of the Ireland XO team since its inception.
Parish Volunteer - Philip Treacy
Philip Treacy is a volunteer helping Ireland Reaching Out in parish of Portumna, Boula & Gortanummera. He is a long-standing member of the community here and also assistant treasurer of South East Galway Archeological and Historical Society (SEGAHS).
About Portumna, Co. Galway
Portumna (the landing place of the oak tree) is one of Galway's most attractive towns and is ideally situated by the River Shannon and Lough Derg allowing it to avail of all the attractions these fine waters have to offer. Portumna Forest Park, Portumna Castle & Gardens, and the Dominican Friary, are all within the town of Portumna.
Boula is situated north of Portumna town and has "St. Peter's & Paul's" Roman Catholic Church, Boula House, Old National School and Community Hall.
Gortanummera is siuated northwest of Portumna town and has "Church of the Ascension of the Lord" Roman Catholic Church & National School
