Nicholas was the 6th son of William Burke from Kilcreevanty, Tuam, Co. Galway. He was born in 1838.

His 'Connemara Girl' is one of the most recognizable paintings handing in the National Gallery, Dublin. It depicts a bare-foot girl gathering seaweed and sticks. The girl wears a shawl over her head.
