Looking for what records may be found in County Louth for the area of Bellurgan Park. According to my ancestors death records they were to have been born in Bellurgan Park, Louth, Ireland. Timeframe is 1815 to 1820. Surnames are O'Hanlon/Hanlon and Carr. I do not know what parish they belonged to. They left Ireland in about 1845 for Elmira, Chemung County, New York, USA. This is according to other information found in New York. The couple I have a interest in are Owen Carr and Bridgett O'Hanlon. Their parents are Thomas Carr and Elizabeth Trainor and Patrick O'Hanlon and Catherine O'Hare. Both Elizabeth and Catherine went to the USA between 1845 and 1860. It appears that both Thomas Carr and Patrick O'Hanlon died before the family left for America. They were Catholic.
A ship record seems to have Owen and Bridgett leaving Liverpool, England and arriving in New York. As of yet I have not located the immigration records for the other family members who traveled to New York. Not sure who in the family may have stayed in Ireland. Many did go to Elmira, New York and then moved on to other locations in the USA. Owen and Bridgett ended up in Portland, Oregon, USA by 1880. They both died there after 1900. It is their death records that give Bellurgan Park as their birth location. Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume you have seen this link about Bellurgan Park  https://www.bellurganpark.ie/

There are two Bellurgan townlands in Co. Louth both in the general area around Dundalk. One is in Ballyboys civil parish and the other is in Castletown civil parish. I believe Bellurgan Park is in Ballybays civil parish. The RC parish would be Lordship and records start in 1833. This explains why I could not find many baptismal records except for the one below in Lordship in 1833. In 1833 the Carrs were in Proleek townland which is in Ballymascanlan civil parish also in North Co. Louth.

I will send your message to an associate who may be able to add more information.

Let me know if you have any questions.

all the names except Carr are found in the Cooley peninsula, there may be Carrs in the Omath area which is closer to Newry. Assuming we have no church records for the time we are in a bit of a pickle but the church records are here but a difficult read expecilly if no year. See http://registers.nli.ie/  Do not be confused as County Louth is in the diocesse of Armagh which itself is also a separate county. There are variant spellings of Trainor such as Traynor.

More interestingly there is a site for Carlingford and Cooley with photos and in the Gallery at page 22 there is an O'Hanlon lady, (the search function on the photos does not apear to work and there are over 3,000 photos) O'Hare is a well known name in the area but Hanlon or O'Hanlon is very much so as in earlier times they were local chieftains. See http://www.carlingfordpeople.ie/ It includes people from Lordship and about other than Carlingford which is the primary town on the Cooley peninsula, Dundalk is the nearest major town. There is or was good transport links from the area to Liverpool. Of interest Joe Biden your last Vice President was there last year as he had a Finegan ancestor from near Lordship.

An interesting site for Louth which has a lot of names and addresses from various sources is http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

    Regards for now

  • Thank you Pat and Roger for the great information. I will be taking your advice and hints with the hope that I can get one more generation back. I have plans to visit the Bellurgan area in May. I will only have one day but I hope to make the best of it while I'm there.

I did come across a note that mentioned Thomas Carr may have been from Newry but nothing certain on that.

  • Hi Again Kat

a day seems so little but here are a few things, firstly near Bellurgan is a bar / restaurant call Fitzpatricks, their website appears to be hacked with chinese language on it and a warning but I am attaching a link to a review for you, an interesting place to eat if only for the decor (food is good too) you might get a chance to speak to locals, there is little else between Dundalk and Carlingford and it is very near Bellurgan, see http://www.ireland-guide.com/establishment/fitzpatricks-bar-and-restaur… there are directions on the right of the site but really you leave Dundalk for Carlingford and it is on your right about 5 miles down.

This is a large transport company near Bellurgan, the name should interest you http://www.hanlontransport.ie/ There is also a small public house, very old fashioned in Carlingford called O'Hares, time is going to be so short for you. Not sure if O'Hares still own it though. Also the name Trainor is has many spellings as I am sure you have discovered including Traynor.

There are 2 good sites for County Down in case you have not discovered them, the 1st one is mainly about the area of Down nearest Louth http://countydown.x10.mx/ and the Mammy one is for all of Down and I see O'Hare is a name of interest on the home page, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/

If you want to ask any more questions my volunteer mail at the site is stpeters@irelandxo.com

    Enjoy your trip,

  • Hi Kat,

The Owen Carr that you're interested in is the oldest of that Carr family that came to Elmira, NY. There were 8 children of Thomas Carr and Elizabeth Trainor that immigrated. My great-great grandfather Patrick Carr was the youngest. My info came from Marie Schmidt of California who was decended from Ann Carr Murphy, child #5. She lived in Dubuque, Iowa. Elizabeth Trainor moved there in 1856 and died there also. They are buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Dubuque. The info from Marie is:
    Thomas Carr b c 1794 d 8/19/1849 Bellurgan, Louth, Ire.
Elizabeth Trainor b c1794 d9/2/1872 at home of dau. Ann in Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa
    Their children;
Thomas no info and could be either he stayed in Ire. or this also could be the father Thomas???
Owen b11/21/1815 Bellurgan Park, Louth, Ire. d7/22/1905 Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon
    Peter b 11/1/1816 Louth, Ire. d 10/20/1873 Elmira,Chemung Co. NY
Bernard b 6/11/1818 Louth, Ire. d 7/3/1903 Elmira, Chemung Co., NY
    James b 1828 Louth, Ire. d ?????
Ann b 1831 Bellurgan, Louth, Ire. d 9/19/1916 Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa
Mary b 1833 Louth, Ire. d 1/31/1893 Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa
Bridget b 1835 Louth, Ire. d Chicago, Cook Co., Ilinois
Patrick b 10/29/1837 Bellurgan, Louth, Ire. d 1/23/1907 at home on Lake St, Penn Yan,Yates Co., NY
