Looking for family and information about the COREY family in Ireland,  county Sligo.  My 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Corey born 26 Jul 1819 in Sligo, immigrated to the United States by way of Canada in 1828, where he learned the shoe manufacturing business, forming a prosperous company with Samuel Boyd of Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  Thomas married Eliza Jane Day on 9 May 1849, had three children, Edwin Henry, Lilla 'Lizzie' Edmond, (my 2nd great grandmother) and Blanche E.  (she married into the Goodyear rubber tire family).  By all accounts, Thomas Corey was well respected and admired serving on the library board, building houses for those working for him.  He lived in a mansion in Marlborough.  The census records for 1870 list his real estate as $40,000 and a personal estate of $60,000.  Thomas died on 4 Jan 1875 of typhoid fever and is buried in a cemetery in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

His parents may be Thomas Corey and Mary.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Corey was a rare surname in Ireland in the 19th century. I could not find any Corey records in Co. Sligo on Roots Ireland, the Tithe listings, Griffiths Valuation head of hosuehold listings or the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Possibly the surname was Carey which was found in many counties in the mid-19th century although very few in Co. Sligo.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Dear Mr. McDonnell, I had my DNA done through Ancestry.  I am 100% European.  I am 50% Irish (my paternal line hails from Donegal, surname Doherty, Farren) 43% Great Britain, 5% Western European, less than 1% Iberian peninsula, less than 1% European East.

It may well be that the name evolved into Corey.  I have found Canada British Regimental Registers of service records for a Thos. Corry from Sligo, born about 1798 for 1813 in Canada.  As my  3rd great grandfather immigrated from Dublin, through Canada East to New York in 1828, I am hopeful this might be his father.

I am hopeful someone from Sligo might have some ideas, but I appreciate any ideas and help!
