I am searching for a birth record and home Parish for my direct ancestor Thomas Cummins or Cummings born about 1815 I believe in Co. Carlow. I know that Thomas sailed from Southampton, England for South Australia with his wife Ann Cashen (also I believe from Carlow b. abt 1826) in 1853 aboard The Epominondas- there is a Ships Register record of their landing in Dec. 1853. The Ships register names Thomas as "Cummins" but soon after landing in South Australia and thereafter, his name became "Cummings". HIs first born was Patrick Joseph. Any information would be or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks. Mark Cummings.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registration of births. marriages and deaths did not begin until 1864 so church records are the only pre-1864 source. I looked on Roots Ireland and found the marriage record transcription in Leighlinbride RC parish. See below. Luckily, a townland was shown for Anne and the spelling would be Coolnakisha in Tullowcreen civil parish. Tullowcreen [arish is in western Carlow near the Kilkenny border and south of rthe Laois border.

I only found one baptismal record for an Anne Cashin and it was in 1822 in Leighlinbridge. Not sure if this is your ancestor. See below. Here is the link to the Leighlinbridge parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0713 There were quite a few Thomas Cummins baptismal records around 1815 so I'm not sure which if any pertain to your ancestor.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Well done Roger - I'm very pleased to have found Anne Cashin, thank you!

Too bad there is no Townland/Parish listed for Thomas Cummins in the Marriage certificate. There has been mention from one family source here some time ago that the Cummins family was from "Glendalough". I discounted this because of the stronger mention of a Carlow connection, however, this may have been a reference to Anne's family only.  I assume that the reference to Glendalough is to the district in Wicklow?? (But I think there is also a Glendalough townland in Waterford?). Do you know f there is a reference in baptisimal records in Glendalough to Thomas Cummins in around 1815?

I'm thinking that one way to possibly identify one Thomas Cummins from another would be by looking for the name of the father in the records being the same as Thomas or the name of one of Thomas' children. His male children were in order: Patrick (also the name of Anne Cashin's own father), James (most likely I feel as the name is repeated often down the line - eg James Martin), John, Michael and George.

    Thanks again. Mark.

  • Hello, Mark!

My own Cummins family came from near Tullow, Co. Carlow and I have been researching the family relentlessly since 2000, locally, on-line and in person in Ireland.

I have a very large database filled with Cummins records and families from all over Co. Carlow and nearby, and I am always delighted to share. I have the marriage of Thomas and Anne in my files, but nothing else about them. Most of the given names you list are found quite often in the Cummins family. However, The one BIG exception is George. If that is truly a family name, then we might be connected, as only my own Cummins family uses that name and it was the name of my earliest known ancestor George Cummins, born about 1750 with wife Margaret.

If you email me at sneirish @ comcast . net, we can compare notes and see if we can find more information on your Thomas Cummins.
