My Great x2 Grandmother Elizabeth Stanton (spelt different ways) was born 3 Apr 1845 Portadown (married & died in New Zealand, arrived here abt 1865), Im trying to find out more about her life in Ireland, and her parents etc.  On her marriage cert May 1865 her parents are recorded as James Stanton and Margaret Musson, which we now believe to be Matthews.  Family story was that her mother died and her father remarried, we think its the opposite, as found a marriage for a Margaret Staunton to Clements Courtney 7 Jun 1854, Drumcree.  Margarets Father is recorded as William Matthews.  Another story is Elizabeths family owned Drumcree Farm.  Her father James Stanton was a member of the Orange Lodge.  Cousins William Beaumont 1844 Portadown, and his sister Mary also came to NZ 1864. There also could be an Aunt & Uncle Elisabeth & William Smith (Smyth) who also came to NZ, a marriage found for them 1863 Ballymore.  Elizabeths father is John Matthews, Williams is James Smyth.  Another family story was that Elizabeth went to school in Scotland, we know that she could read and write, she wrote many stories that were published in the papers.  I would love to find out more about Elizabeth Stanton (known to us as Grandma Green), and her family in Ireland, if at all possible.  Many thanks

  • What information is on the 1854 marriage certificate? What was Margaret’s townland (address), and what was her father’s occupation? What denomination was the church?

  • Elizabeth married in New Zealand, she married in an Anglican Church, no info on the cert as to early  The info was on the intention to marry.  Her father was just recorded as deceased, only Portadown was on the Cert, not alot of info.  Her Cousins,  The Beaumonts were Wesleyan Methodists.  Infor from a Beaumont desendant was that William Beaumont was born in Portadown, and also his mothers family was from there, sorry thats all I have to go on.

    Kind regards

  • You haven’t answered my question about the 1854 Irish marriage. That’s the key to tracing the family further. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Post the details here and I’ll see what more information I can give you.
