Our second great-grandparents, Jeremiah Gannon, born abt 1808 in Ireland, died in Minneapolis MN USA on 26 Apr 1890 and Sarah Kelly, born in 1819 in Ireland, died in Minneapolis MN USA 23 Dec 1890, emigrated from Ireland to Ontario before their first son, John, was born in Oakville, Halton region, Ontario, Canada on 27 Apr 1840.

We believe Jeremiah's parents were John Gannon and Mary unknown.

Despite hiring researchers in Canada and in Ireland, we cannot locate their place of origin in Ireland. We also don’t know if they married in Ireland or Canada.

They had the following children

John K. Gannon 1840–1929 [married Rebecca Reid 1847-1905]

William Gannon 1843–1910  [married Ellen Wright Abt 1846- ____

Mary Hazel Gannon 1844–1886 [married John Layden 835-1893

Sarah Ann Gannon 1848–1886 [married John Giles Pearce 1847-1912]

Catherine Gannon 1850–1950 [married James Matthew Heysel 1856-1937]

Thomas Dan Gannon 1849–1923 [married Mary Elizabeth Doyle 1855-1923)

Michael Gannon 1854– _____ ??????

Margaret Gannon 1855–1935 [married Jacob Smith 1861-1932]

Bridget Gannon 1856–_____  [married John Williamson 1800- _____?]

Elizabeth M. Gannon 1858–1945 [married James M. Kinnan Abt 1861- _____]

They are found in successive Canadian censuses beginning in 1851 in Oxford, Halton, Burford, and Brant North counties.

Between 1883 and 1888, they emigrated with their son Thomas Dan Gannon to Minnesota.

They have many descendants in Canada and USA, and quite a few have been DNA-tested. The two I know with the most Gannon-Kelly DNA have GedMatch numbers T575252 and T229722.

Thank you for reading all this!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Likely you ancestors came from the Galway/Mayo/Roscommon area and many of the RC parishes for those counties don't have records back to 1840 and earlier. I was unable to find a marriage record on Roots Ireland or a baptismal record for Jeremiah.

As an aside, my wife also has a Gannon great-great grandfather an we are still trying to find out his origin in Ireland.

Your best bet is the DNA testing. Hopefully, new matches will show up which will help you pinpoint where your ancestors came from in Ireland.

  • Roger McDonnell, thank you for your prompt and helpful reply. I often say that only DNA will provide answers for so many of us.  I understood that the Irish government was/is collecting DNA from some people whose family have lived in the same place for a long time.  That's very exciting but I don't know how it will be handled, what the timeline is, etc.  I thought I'd give this board a chance since Jeremiah is a fairly unncommon name.  Thanks again.

  • Sagewoman:

There have been projects to collect DNA samples from irish people who had all of their eight great-grandparents from a certain area but Not sure where that stands now. Actually, Jereimah was a fairly common surname in Ireland in the 19th century particular;y down in Cork and Kerry.

  • Hello Sagewoman,

I'm not supplying the answer you are looking for but I thought I would reach out to let you know that I am also one of Jeremiah Gannon and Sarah Kelly's descendants through their daughter Mary Hazel who is my 2nd g-grandmother.
I live in Ontario but growing up I remember my grandmother talking of a branch of the family that had gone to Minnesota and at some point that connection had been lost in her generation.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello and let you know I am always looking out for clues in Canada, but I'm not quite sure how far I'll get.

    All the best in 2018,

    DMcG9

  • dmcg9, I'm sorry;p I must have overlooked your reply. I'd love to connect with you through Ancestry or email. I am MARYANTONIA  in Ancestry, and my email is mary@sagewoman.net.

Mary's son Thomas Daniel Layden, lived in Minnesota for some time and married a relative of his sister Sarah's husband here.  Her youngest son was 2 when she died and he was sent to live with Mary's brother and my 1st great grandfather Thomas Dan Gannon.  We have connected with many Gannon and Doyle cousins, but haven't connected with any of Mary Hazel's descedants. Jeremiah and Sarah moved to Minnesota with Thomas Dan and his wife Mary Doyle and died in Minnesota.
