Hi my name is Kath and whilst browsing the internet I came across your site.  I am reaching my fathers ancestry and was born in

Belfast 2/10/1929 his name is Raymond Martin and his parents where James Alexander Martin born 1892 and his mother Kathleen Martin (nee Monaghan) born about 1899.    I notice that my grandmother Anna Marie Martin (nee Bell) born about 1861 was a child of John and Emily and they had 11 children.  Anna married John Henry Martin 1888 in Belfast.  They had 2 children Emily Alice 16/01/1890 in Gortnaguig and my grandfather James born 24/07/1890.  In 1891 Anna and John where living in Scotland but returned back to Ireland and living in Belfast.  I also found out that mt ggreatmother travelled to Canada with my grandfather 1912/1913.   They travelled from Liverpool onboard the Empess of Ireland.  They lived in Winnipeg he 24/121914 mt grandfather enlisted CEF and joined 17th battery 5th brigade.  I could not fine any else until that in 1919 my ggreatmother was back in Ireland living at 2 Maryville avenue, Lisbon Road and this was also the year she passed away and my grandfather paid £1 for the burial plot.  I was hoping if anyone could fill in the gaps and also have any information regarding John Henry Martin Anna Marie's husband.

  • In addition to Anna Marie Martin in 1919, that grave in the City cemetery also contains Kathleen Martin who died 17.4.1945 aged 46.  She died in the workhouse infirmary but her usual address was 2 Maryville Avenue.

John Henry Martin was 22 when he married, so born c 1866. His father was James, a labourer.  John was living at 34 St Peter’s Hill, Belfast when he married.

  • Thank you for your reply to my post.  If you happen to find any more information regarding John Henry Martin my grandfather or his parents please post.  My grandmother was working in the Belfast Lunatic Asylum as a servant before marrying John Henry.  Also any information regarding Emily Alice Martin b. 1890 in Gortnaguig.

  • Suspect that this is Anna Marie’s family:

Informant for Emily’s birth was Emily Bell of Gornagwyg.

An Emily Martin d/o John married on 3.6.1914 at Knockbreda Presbyterian. She married William Percy Cowley of the Isle of Man (and presumably went off to live there). Different family to yours though. This is hers:

There’s an Emily Martin born in Tyrone of about the right age in Fintona in the 1911 census:
