Hi

I am hoping to find some help in finding information on my decendants. I have the following information, Joseph and Mary Hynes who came to Australia.

As per the shipping records (Unassisted/Assisted) they departed Liverpool on 16.10.1855 for Point Henry, Victoria and arrived on 16.01.1856. It was noted that they were from Fermanagh (which is puzzling) as according to Mary's death certificate she was from New Quay and I am led to believe Joseph was from Clare or Galway.  Joseph's parents were Joseph Hynes and Mary O'Connell. Mary's parents were John Halloran (O'Halloran) and Bridget Daly. They were 20/21 so they would've been born c1833/4.

I have located records on a marriage for Joseph Hynes and Mary Halloran in the Irish Catholic Parish Register 1655 - 1915 for Marriage Place New Quay, Clare, Ireland Parish Variants Glanamanagh, Glenamanagh Diocese Galway which appears to fit in.  I have also looked through the parish register and find many Hynes' and Hallorans and am hoping they may be related but don't know how to go about finding any link.

I am a member of Ancestry and have cannot find any more solid clues.

Also not knowing how one would depart Ireland as an Unassisted/Assisted Immigrant I am also curious to know why it was noted on the shipping records that they were Fermanagh?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Sharon

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

Ironically, about a month ago I discovered that my wife's Tierney ancestors were from New Quay RC parish. They left for America in 1865. I found three baptismal records in the New Quay records. I also saw many Halloran and Hynes records in the register. The parish records start in 1847

They lived in the village of Finavarra. The civil parish is Oughtmama.

I checked and there are no prior messages for New Quay or Oughtmama on our parish pages.

I also looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Oughtmama and there were six Hynes records but no Joseph listed. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/clare/oughtmana.htm

Here is a link to the Co. Clare genealogy resources for Oughtmama  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/oughtmama.htm

I would suggest that you consider autosomal DNA testing either thru Ancestry or Family Tree DNA or another testing company. Possibly you will match others with Hynes or Halloran connections.

Possibly the remark about Co. Fermanagh was a mistake.

The family likely departed from Galway city.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hello Roger

Thank you very much for your promt reply, I was thrilled to hear from somebody so quickly.

    Wow... lots of questions.

How did you establish that my Joseph & Mary lived in the village of Finavarra, the civil parish is Oughtmama?

I have looked at the links that you provded and was wondering how I would go about confirming if there was any relationship to my Hynes' and Hallorans?

I can only assume that my irish decendants were not well off.

I would also like to reseach how the families travelled from their home towns to the various ports in Ireland then across to Liverpool and the incentives that were offered to them.

My plan is to do an autosomal DNA testing in the hope of finding some connection.

Any information you could provide me with will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Sharon

  • I have Hynes and Tierney ancestors from the Galway area. Unfortunately I do not have much on them as they are a line I haven't spent time on. I have Michael Tierney (1850) in Galway. He married Ellen Jennings and began having children in 1877 in Fort. A daughter, Catherine was born in Belmont in 1880 and moved to Chicago.

Sorry! My message was badly worded. My wife's Tierney relatives were from Finavarra.

Autosomal testing should be very helpful.

I don't think they travelled to Liverpool. Instead the ship likely left Liverpool and picked up more passengers possibly in Galway city.

  • Hi, I hope this is allowed. Searching for Hynes and Halloran, New Quay, Burren, Clare. I have made up a spreadsheet listing marriages & baptisms from the parish register in the hope somebody may be connected to the other Hynes' & Halloran's listed. Gedmatch A191492. My decendants are Joseph Hynes and Mary Halloran highlighted in yellow on the spreadsheet.

  • Hi Sharon!

I did a one to one match with you and my wife but got no match on Gedmatch.

You did a great job with the spreadsheet. I will see if we can upload the file to the New Quay and Oughtmama parish pages.

  • Thank you very much Roger, I have exhausted every avenue available which has lead me to do up spreadsheets of various records I have found in the hope somebody out there may be connected.
