as far as we know for fact the 2 girls emigrated to Australia separately. Ellen in 1872 onboard the Polmaise & Rebecca in 1875 onboard the Star Queen, also on this voyage was a 7 yr old girl Sarah Lamont who accompanied Rebecca. We haven't been able to find out any info re Sarah but are assuming that she was the Illegitimate daughter of Ellen as she went into her household on arrival in Maryborough Queensland. On both their marriage certificates the girls named William Lamont as their father, but on the birth certificates of their children named several places as their place of birth being Dungannon, Ballymoney, Cookstown & Tyrone & Antrim. We do know that the family were Presbyterian & think that their mother was also Sarah. We also know but can't verify that both parents were deceased at the time they left Ireland. Thank you so much Elwyn for taking the trouble to look up this info for me. The age of Sarah Lamont when she came out to Australia is questionable as we are only going on the shipping records which were far from accurate, but given that her supposed mother Ellen came out in 1872 she would have had to been born prior to that, I know she was no older than 10 on the voyage to Australia so that gives a fair range for her dob. The family folklore states that William Lamont died just before the birth of Rebecca as a result of an accident with a horse & he was a flax farmer, given that Rebecca was born 1850. Their mother Sarah died when the girls were still very young & they went to live with relatives who treated them as servants & as soon as they were able they left, we think there was another sister who went to America. If this is in any way correct then the deaths that you found wouldn't fit as they both fed to a fair old age. Ellen Lamont married John Westray in Maryborough & when Sarah arrived she went under the name of Westray but we have a stumbling block as to what happened to her here in Queensland. Thank you Sue.

Rebecca Lamont 1857-1940 is my Great Grandmother. Her Daughter (my Grandmother) lived in Western Australia 1892 - 1983. I have a few more details if your interested.
