McManus research Bio

I have been researching my McManus roots off and on for years.  Furthest back I get is to my 2nd great-grandfather, Michael McManus born 1800 in Cavan (I have 1 record that said that).  He married Julia Sheeran (sp?) in Ireland and they immigrated to Canada 1844, with one son who had been born in Ireland.

They lived in Canada about 10 years (3 children born there).  They then moved and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA.  My great grandfather Daniel McManus was born in Milwaukee 1857.

The more research I have done looking for him in Cavan it looked like he was possibly from Kinwaley, which must have been in Cavan back then.  I know there are many McManus's in Fermanah so now I would love to narrow down where the McManus's and Sheeran's were from in County Cavan or Fermanagh.

Any support is very appreciated.

  • The parish of Kinawley hasn’t moved from Cavan to Fermanagh or vice versa. Part of it is in Fermanagh and part in Cavan.

Therefore Cavan is in the United Kingdom and the Republic?   Where do you suggest I look at records?

    Thank you

  • Kathleen,

No, Cavan is in the Republic of Ireland and Fermanagh is in the United Kingdom. However parish boundaries often pay little regard to county boundaries and it’s common to find them in more than 1 county, as in this case. So the parish of Kinawley is half in the Republic of Ireland and half in the United Kingdom.

Kinawley civil parish is the RC parish of Kinnally. You can view the maps on this site to see where the parish boundary is. If you click on the civil parish option it lists the townlands in that parish by county.

    https://www.johngrenham.com/browse/counties/rcmaps/cavanrc.php#maps/

The RC Kinnally parish records start in 1835. They are on-line free on the National Library site:

    http://registers.nli.ie/parishes

    They are also on Ancestry.

If you are looking for other records such as leases you should try PRONI in Belfast, the National Archives in Dublin and the National Library in Dublin. A personal visit is required to view many of their records but some records are on-line eg wills, and each has on-line catalogues you can search. Though PRONI tends to have records relating to Northern Ireland and the Dublin Archives tend to focus on those in the Republic of Ireland, that’s not always so. People often had property or business interests in different parts of Ireland and you will often find records for Cavan in PRONI and records for Fermanagh in Dublin. Taking wills as an example, someone living in Fermanagh could have their will probated in Londonderry or at the Central Probate Office in Dublin. So records could be in either set. Check both.

Griffiths Valuation (1848 – 1864) for all of Ireland is on-line:

The tithe applotment records (1820- 30) for Cavan are on this site:

The tithe applotment records for Fermanagh are on this site:

The censuses for 1901 & 1911 are on this site, as are also some fragments of the 1821 census of Cavan and Fermanagh.
