Hello;

  I hope someone can help find something on this fellow.  His daughter Margaret Anne O'Neill married 1891 St Anne's Church Belfast.  She was born 1871, supposedly Belfast, but no records of birth found.  His other daughter Mary O'Neill born abt 1860s married at the same church 1900 and another Church of Ireland parish, Ballynure in 1913.  Margaret O'Neill gave a brother William as her nearest relative in Ireland on her departure to Canada 1920, but no specific location.  I have been unable to find anything on their father Paul O'Neill linking him to them.  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Lorilee,

    Could you give us the details of the various marriages in 1891, 1900 & 1913. It might help the search for the family. What were the dates of the marriages and who did they marry?

  • Lorilee,

    Mary in 1901:

    This looks to be Hugh & Mary in 1911:

    In both censuses Mary’s place of birth is Co Antrim, rather than Belfast which people tended to put if born there. Her age puts her birth before 1864 and so it will be tricky to locate.

    Hugh’s probate abstract:

    Probate of the Will of Hugh Bamford late of Ballyboley Ballynure County Antrim Farmer who died 5 March 1912 granted at Belfast to Mary Bamford the Widow The Reverend Samuel Thomas Nesbitt Clerk and William McCreary Barklie Farmer

    I searched for Paul O’Neill deaths in Co Antrim 1870 onwards but couldn’t see any. Nor any McNeill or Neill.

    I assume this is Margaret in 1911:

    You’ll notice that Maggie put down Co Antrim for her place of birth but Belfast for most of the children. That again suggest to me she was not born in Belfast. There was a Margaret Anne O’Neill birth in Scotchquarter, Antrim town on 17.12.1870. Mother was Mary O’Neill. Birth was illegitimate, and no father’s name is given. That could fit the information you have, but obviously I can’t be certain.

  • Thank you Elwyn.  Despite the details we have that her birth was Dec 25, 1871, you may have found the correct birth details for Maggie. She did name her first daughter Mary, and oddly Paul has not been a forename with Margaret or Mary's sons. Of course it all remains difficult to confirm. Interesting information.  Thank you again.
