My father was born in 1923 in Tullamore. He was raised in Birr by a  foster couple who also had another son. I have been told his father went to America with his family and was killed in a road accident.

Both he and my mother worked at Tullamore Hospital for a while until they both came to England for work.

I have never really had any contact with my father so I have no way to fill the gaps. I would appreciate any help.

  • Brian,

There is just the 1 James McCabe birth in Tullamore in 1923 so that may prove to be your ancestor. His birth was registered there in Apr-Jun 1923, Volume 3, page 432. You can order a photocopy of the civil certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros).  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can’t e-mail your order to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

I would recommend that you also track down his marriage certificate. That should give you his father’s name and occupation. So that can be checked against the birth to make sure the father’s details are correct. That way you know you have the right family.

  • Thanks Elwyn, I have my mothers marriage certificate but the section for Father of the groom is left blank. I will order a birth certificate and I thank you for your kind assistance.
