I am searching for records of Margaret Thornton and family. She was my great great grandmother. She married William Osborne in Rathvilly in July 1848. In the marriage record it looks like she is from a place called 'Castle' but it is hard to see.  William Osborne was from Blackditches , Wicklow. Trying to search for baptisms. She had a brother John Thornton who was in the army and became a Chelsea pensioner.  He was from Carlow.

My gr gr grandparents moved eventually to Dublin and later to Manchester.

Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located a possible baptismal record for Margaret in 1824 in Rathvilly. See below. Using the father's name of George and a mother with a surname of Kelly, seven other baptismal records for likely siblings came up.

    Catherine 1821 Judith 1827 James 1829 Daniel 1833 Thomas 1836 John 1838 Anne 1843

I'm wondering if the K Va. for the address stands for Knockevaghan townland in Rathvilly parish.

  • Thank you so much!  Wow, that is amazing :-)  It must be the family I have been searching for.

I had searched for Margaret but only from 1828 as we had assumed she was born around 1830 from the information on censuses. I did see the name George Thornton and Mary Kelly as parents for someone else.  I also couldn't find John.

William Osborne was from Blackditches, Wicklow. Born around 1826. Perhaps it is possible to find his family but understand if it is difficult. Searching for Irish ancestors is not easy.

We are coming to Ireland in May. It is my first time. Can't wait.

Thank you again for fantastic help.

I searched on Roots Ireland from 1821-1831 and there were two William Osbornes but neither was in Blackditches. Assuming he was Catholic, here is a link to the Blackditches parish register. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0465

  • I have a question regarding the Thorntons from Rathvilly, county Carlow.

George Thornton and Mary Thornton's (Kelly)  children. One son was James,  babtized 1829.

I also wonder if there was another son with the same name , James , born abt. 1842 in Rathvilly of the same parents ?

    Kind regards

  • Hi Renee!

An 1842 record did not show up on Roots Ireland.    Why don't you scan the register (two separate microfilms) in 1842 and see if you see a possible record. If the handwriting was illegible, Roots Ireland would not transcribe the record.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0727

  • Hi Juie,

    nice to meet you!

I have not been able to trace William Osborne's parents, unfortunately. I am however quite sure

that they were from county Wicklow. William Osborne's place of birth in the 1881 Manchester census is county Wicklow.

There is no evidence of them ( his parents ) moving to Manchester and therefor

I assume they passed away in Ireland. We visited Glendalough in the national park in Wicklow and a few old church graveyards there

had headstones with the name, William Osborne. However it is not sure these could have been his father.

It would be good to investigate this further.

    Are you in England?

    Kind regards

    Renee
