Tuam Parish Events to Celebrate Tuam 400

Tuam Parish Pastoral Council in cooperation with the Old Tuam Society are organising a series of events to celebrate the ecclesiastical history of Tuam as part of Tuam 400 celebrations. These will take place over the week-end of June 6th ? 9th.

 

 The weekend will commence with the annual Mass for the Feast Day of St. Jarlath, Thursday 6th June at 7.00 pm in Cloonfush, the original site of his church. This will be followed by a walk retracing the footsteps of St. Jarlath from Cloonfush to the site of the first church in the town of Tuam at the present St. Mary?s Cathedral. This will be an ecumenical event led by the Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, the Right Reverend Patrick Rooke and the Archbishop of Tuam, the Most Reverend Michael Neary. On arrival at St. Mary?s (approx. 8.30 pm) a short prayer service will take place. A talk on St. Jarlath will be given by Dr. Tony Claffey, followed by refreshments. Mr. Jarlath Canney will conduct a brief tour and talk on St. Mary?s Cathedral to round off the evening.

 

On Friday evening, the 7th June and Saturday the 8th, an exhibition of old photographs of the Cathedral of the Assumption and parish life will take place, with short talks by Fintan Higgins, in the New Parish Centre (The Mercy Convent) Times: 6.00 to 9.00 pm on Friday and 12.00 to 8.00 pm on Saturday.

 

Also on Saturday, a guided walk, taking in the important Ecclesiastical sites around the town with a short history of each by Dr. Tony Claffey will take place, starting at St. Mary's Cathedral at 2 pm.

 

On Sunday the 9th of June, the 12.30 pm mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption will be a special mass of celebration for Tuam 400.
