John Knox was born around 1798, in Greenville, Ballymoney (I think).  He went to Jamaica and was there in 1823/4 where he met Rachael Gordon (widow of Alexander Hanslep (died 1823) and married her in 1824.  She was the daughter of Margaret and Alexander Gordon who had slaves whom she inherited and, as her husband, John Knox also became their owner.  By 1836, John and Rachael were separated and both held slaves in their own right.  All this can be verified in ancestry.co.uk under the Slave Registers of former British Colonial Dependencies, 1813-1834.

In 1831 John Knox and Sophia Gunn had twins called Eliza Burrows Knox and Ann Burrows Knox.  The children were baptised and this can be found in familysearch.org.  In 1836 John Knox had another set of twins John and William Knox.  I cannot find their mother's name nor if they were baptised.

In 1837 John Knox and the four children return to Greenville, Ballymoney. In 1838 he married Eliza Park, sister of Rev Robert Park, Presbyterian Minister of Stewartstown, Tyrone.  In 1852 the family migrated to Adelaide, South Australia.  They travelled out on the Tancred and a steward on the ship, William Wells, wrote about John Knox being in Jamaica.  This information was supplied on http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/knox/3282/ 

I would like to find out if there is any record of the Knox children at school in Ireland prior to their leaving. 

The daughter of John Knox, Elizabeth, is my GGGGmother.  I would love to know about her time in Ireland.  Can anyone give me any hints as to how I can find out about schooling..

    I have a feeling I searched for school records in PRONI for the children previously but could not find any.  (There aren’t many school records from the 1840s that have survived).

    Perhaps someone else reading this might be able to help.

  • You certainly did Elwyn but we were in contact via another mailing list.  I am still searching for information and have now found this source.

     I have since learned that he put the place in Greenville up for sale Belfast Newsletter Jan 18 1845 (Desirable residence and Farm Greenville).  I wonder if the children went to school in Belfast.  His daughter Ann married a William Dale in Jul 1851 in Linenhall, Belfast and John Knox's address is Queen St, Belfast, formerly of Greenville, Ballymoney.  She died in Nov 1851 and his address is said to be Donegall St.  

    His younger two children might have gone to school in Belfast?

    It’s quite possible that the children did attend school in Belfast. However there’s rather a lot of schools in the city. I have attached a list of what PRONI hold by way of attendance and related records. Scroll down to Shankill & Belfast Shankill. I think there are about 150 schools there. Without an idea of which they attended there's no easy way of finding the right one. And I am not sure how many of them will have records for the 1840s. And of course there were other private schools whose records PRONI doesn’t always have.

    Unless you have deep pockets I would say that getting a researcher to look for school attendance records could be an expensive and possibly fruitless exercise.
