Hello, I am trying to locate a Edward Farley who is the father of my ancestor Thomas Farley born in Co. Cavan, Ireland about 1855 (1850-1860). I have the name from Thomas' marriage certificate. The only Edward Farley I can find on Griffith valuation in Co. Cavan is Edward Farley  in the Townland of Greaghagibney & Parish of Larah. Can anyone please tell me what is the catholic Parish for this townland and if there are RC records for this parish going back to the mid 1850s. They were RC because it states so on Thomas Farley's son certificates in England.

Many thanks in advance for any help or advise anyone can give,

Frances

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish would be Larah or Laragh, however, there is a gap in their records. Roots Ireland has baptismal records for 1798-1833 for Larah RC and the records then pickup in 1876. So likely there would be no baptismal record for Thomas. I looked for an Edward Farley in the earlier Larah records but did not find a record.

  • Thank you very much Roger for getting back to me, greatly appreciated.

I have been looking at the census & Tithe applotment Books for this townland and the Surname appears to be Farrelly not Farley as I have it on Marriage cert & UK census. There ia a Edward & Michael Farrelly on the same plot in the TAB for 1833.

On the 1901 census there is a James Farrelly with a son called Edward. I wonder if this could be the family I'm looking for? Edward  Farley or Farrelly don't appear to be a common name in Cavan at that time and the fact that there is a son Edward could this possible be a grandson?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this one if it is not asking too much.

Again many thanks for your time & help & kindest regards,

    Frances

I would agree that this Farrelly family is connected to your ancestor and that Edward is likely a grandson to the Edward Farley in your message. James may have been a brother to Thomas. The key would be finding the civil marriage record if it exists and getting a copy. The civil marriage record would show the name of James' father

  • Hi Roger,

That was a great hint. I have done just that but had a job trying to find out in what civil registration district this townland was in, now I know it is Cootehill. James Farrelly's wife was Catherine Monahan or Monaghan, there children were born in 1875 & 1878 however I can't find a marriage for them in Cootehill. The records avaliabe on the Irish genealogy site don't have images for those years so no joy there. I also did a cross referecce with the wife's name there is one for her in 1874 however none for a James Farrelly.  the only one I could find for both names was a parish records on ancestry for Knockbride Parish Co. Louth in 1874 but no father's names only sponsors. I have to find out in which registration district this parish is to persue it further.

Thanks a million for your sound advise I really appreciated it.

    Kindest regards,

    Frances

The pre 1882 marriage images will eventually be added to www.irishgenealogy.ie   Just don't know if it will be this year or later.

  • Frances,

Found your two year old post today and thought I would reply - better late than never.  I too am searching for my great grandfather Thomas Joseph Farley who in 1880 was in Albany, NY with his brother John and Susan Donohoe Farley.  I have a DNA match with a descendent of John and Susan.  John & Susan lead me to an 11 Apr 1875 civil marriage record in Templeport Parish, Kilsob, Cavan, Ireland.  John (1845- )  and Thomas's (1857 - ) father is Bernard Farrelly and their mother Anne Cavanagh.  Bernard and his oldest son John are shoemakers.  Just starting to research further - Bernard Farrelly is in Kilsob in Griffith's Valuation. Looking in Tithe Allotment and found a William, Bernard and Owen Farrelly in Larah Parish.  Googled Larah and found your post.

  • Hi Charlie,

Lovely to hear from you and my apoligies in taking so long to get back to you. As it had been two years since I did this research I have been going over all the information I have on this case and can't find anything that would connect me up with your Thomas Joseph Farley or Farrelly's.

My Thomas Farley married MARY Ann Ewards 25th February 1883 AT ST. jOHN'S CHURCH, Walham Green, Middlesex  UK. on marriage certificates it states that Thoma's father is Edward, the posting above shows what I have discovered so far about an Edward Farrelly in Co. Cavan Ireland, as there are not many Edward farleys or Farrelly in Co. cavan for tht time space I can only presume tht this may be Thomas farley's father, and theer is a James Farreley whose father is also Edward on his marriage certificate and in the same townland who could possible be my Thomas Farley's brother.

If you can see a conection I would love to hear back from you, thanks a million for getting in touch,

    Kindest regards,

    Frances.
