Hi:

I am looking for ancestors of Garrett Riley, born about 1610 in Cavan Co, Ireland.  His father was Ferrall O'Riley who died about 1660 in Ireland.  Garrett is the brother of my ancestor, Miles Riley. The brothers, came to the US in 1634/35 on the "Bonaventure" to Maryland.  Garrett worked his trade and owned land, then sold his properties and returned to Ireland in about 1650.  He is listed on Griffiths Land Valuation as a land owner in Kells, Meath Co., in 1655 and 1665.  I would love to find out if there are any ancestors left in Ireland that could be my family.  I am planning a visit to Ireland in September 2016 and hoping someone may have some info to point me in the right direction.

  • Dear Linda

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out. I hope someone researching the family name will be in touch with you. You are very lucky to be able to point to such an early connection with an ancestor!

If you have some time in Dublin during your trip it would be a good idea to visit the Valuation Office on Abbey Street, Dublin. Armed with the information you have on the Griffith's Valuation you should be able to find out the progression of the tenure on that plot up to the 1970s/1980s through the Revision Books. You can learn more about it HERE

I see that there are 10 entries for Riley in the 1901 Census in Co. Cavan

    Best wishes

  • Just want to mention that the Griffith's Valuation for Co. Cavan was done c. 1857 and not in the 1600's.  All of the Counties in Ireland were valuated by Griffith in the mid 1800's.

  • I guess I mis-stated the resource. From the Irish Manuscript Commission, Published by the Dublin Stationery OFfice, Ananlecta Hibernica, Volume 22, 1960, pages ?? To 264, as listed in the Book, "The Lineage and descent of the O'Reillys", there is a Table- REILLY EXTRACTS OF THE VALUATION AND RETURNE OF THE TOWNE OF KELLS IN THE COUNTY OF MEATH, Which lists Garrett Reyley as a Owner and resident of a a stone and clay walled thatcht tenement in 1663.  I hope this is helpful.
