Hello,

My 4th great grandmother Ellen Gormley nee' Donlan is said to be a native of this county via her obit and her husband Cornelius Gormley not sure where in Ireland he was born.

They had 5 children but I've only found 3 baptism records for the following.Bridget,Patrick and Elizabeth.

I have yet to find the marriage date for them or who their parents are.

My husband and I are traveling to Ireland in May for our 25th wedding anniversary and I'd like to do a little side trip to the old homestead if I could

Any help would be appreciated

Lisa

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Lough Gowna/Scrabby RC parish is located in the southwest corner of Co. Cavan. The parish also includes part of northeast Co. Longford. Here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0159 and you should scan the register for the other two baptisms and maybe the marriage record. The marriage was likely in the bride's parish so if Ellen was from one parish over, the records if available would possibly be there. When did the Gormleys leave Ireland? I did not see a Gormley record in the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Scrabby parish.

  • Hi Lisa.

The following detail on Wisconsin Census shows Cornelius & Spouse Ellen, son Patrick born in Ireland, Mary in New York & Ellen in Ohio.                Cornelius GormleyM50 Ireland Ellen Gormley F60Ireland  Patrick Gormley M23Ireland  Mary Gormley F20New York  Ellen Gormley  F18Ohio. (Ellen Gormley married Chester Graves 15th October 1873 in Brown, Wisconsin).

Does this tie in with your research?

  • Lisa,

If you are still checking this I do have a Patrick Gormley in my family tree from 1796. If there is the same on your tree maybe you can contact me and we might have something to chat about.
