One RC & 1 C of I may be an unlikely match.

If you think either is correct I can look for siblings and parents' marriage.

The above is the only record of Harper Yorke in births, deaths or marriages. I couldn't find him in the Irish Censuses either

The 1901 Census has a Margaret Ferguson aged 21 - too young for 1853 birth; there is no census between 1851 & 1901!

Griffiths Valuation has no Yorkes in Cavan but lots of Fergusons.

The Tithe Applotments has Hugh Yorke in Moynehall Annegelliff Cavan in 1826; there are 21 Fergusons including 1 in Annagelliff parish 1826 so maybe...?

GRONI records only start in 1864 so no luck there.

  • Hi Mary,

We communcated last year as part of the Epic Journeys for IrelandXO, many thanks for your help with it.  I will copy the story here for you  Regards Carmel

Story: John Yorke was born on 26 March 1890 to Robert Yorke and Margaret Ferguson and baptised on 30 March, 1890 in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan and his sponsors were John Briens and Kate Briens.

In 1901, John (12) was living with his father Robert (50), his mother Maggie (48) and his siblings, Robert 21, Mary 18, Joe 16, Bridget 14, Herbert 8, James 6 and Bella aged 3.  His father was a poultry dealer and his brothers Robert and Joe were dealers.

In 1911, his parents were living in Raferagh, Co. Monaghan, they were renting from Owen McEnaney and Joseph, James and Isabella were living with them.  His father, James and Joseph were working as poulterers.  His parents were married for forty years and had ten children and nine were still alive in 1911.  From perusal of the extant baptismal records they were all born in Kingscourt.  In 1911, his brother Robert was living in Shercock and working as a fowl dealer, he had married Mary Martin in 1906, he married for a second time to Bridget Clarke in 1926 and then a third time to Jane McGorry in 1929.

On 20 December 1908, John left Londonderry on board the California, he was going to New York and arrived on 29th December.  He gave his father’s address as Shercock, Co. Cavan.  John was also a fowl dealer.  He had no money with him, but his sister had paid his fare, and he was going to Mrs Mary Smith, his sister who lived at 647 Second Avenue, New York.  On 5 June 1917, he completed his WWI Draft Registration form.  He was living at 101 Webster Avenue, New York.  He was working as a chauffeur for Frank Karrington.  In 1920, he was living in Webster Avenue, Westchester, New York, with his wife Elizabeth.  Also living with them were their two childen Margaret and John and a niece Geraldine Tracey (4).  John was working as a chauffeur for a private family.  In 1925, they were living in Union Street.

John died in 1934 and was buried in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle, New York.  When he passed on he had not been naturalized as a citizen.  Elizabeth then petitioned for naturalization, she was previously known as Lizzy Lally, born on 19 November 1889 in Galway, she was now 65 and working as an attendant.  They had married on 11 February 1914 in New Rochelle, New York.  She had lawfully entered the United States through Boston, Massachusetts on 20 August 1909 having travelled on board the Cymric-White Star Line.  At this stage her three children were Margaret Schneider born 30 January 1915, John Yorke born 11 September 1918, and Gloria Bacon born 3 October, 1925 all born in New Rochelle.  She was now living at 27, Verplanck Avenue, Beacon, New York.  Her form was witnessed by Charles Schneider who lived at the same address and Charles Schneider who lived at Rossway Road, Pleasant Valley Dutchess, New York, Elizabeth completed her Oath of Allegiance on 2 April 1955.

Elizabeth Mary Lally was baptised in the parish of Oranmore, Co Galway to Martin Lally and Bridget Mooney, in the townland of Creganna.  In 1901, Elizabeth was living with her mother, Bridget Mullin, she had been widowed twice, her siblings were also living with her Margaret 15, Maria 13, Martin 9 and her half sister Anne Mullin aged 8, they were a farming family.  In 1940, in Lawton Street, New Rochelle, Elizabeth was living with her son John, his wife Evelyn, they were both bookeepers and her youngest daughter Gloria.  Elizabeth died in September 1980 and her last address was 12572, Rhinebeck, Dutchess, New York, USA.

Mary Gardiner, John’s granddaughter completes this history, her father John (Jack) was 17 when his father John died, as a result, and his grandchildren never got to meet him.  Jack had nine children, three girls and six boys: Dianne 1941-2005, Michael 1944-2008, Karen 1946, John (Jack) 1948, Jim 1949, Mary 1952, Joe 1953, Will 1957 and Pete 1959.  They were all born in New Rochelle.  Their father was a Vice President of 7-UP Bottling Co.  In August 1960, they moved to Connecticut when her father purchased a Pepsi franchise.  Unfortunately, he passed away in August 1962, leaving his wife to rear eight children (Dianne had married previously in June 1960).  They now use York as the preferred spelling of their surname.  John also had two daughters, Marguarite 1915-1996 who had four children, Charles "Cappy" 1935-2011, Judy 1937-2001, Joan 1938 & Susy 1942.  Gloria 1925-1955, she had three children, Carrol 1946, Eldona 1949 and Eugene.
