Hi All

My sister and i are presently trying to compile our family tree ready for a big family reunion planned for October 2015 in Bunbury Western Australia and we seem to have hit a bit of a wall!!!  My Great Great Grandfather was James Kearney born in, or near Macroom, County Cork in 1846.  He was transported to Fremantle, Western Australia aboard the last convict ship the "Hougoumont" in 1868 where he went on to marry Catherine Tobin in 1873 and became one of the founding Fathers of the township of Nannup Western Australia.  Now it is time for us to search back beyond his arrival in Australia which is where we are having trouble.  We believe his father was Thomas James Kearney born in 1820 and his mother's name we think was Maud (or Maude).  I have found some Census records of 1901 which lists a Thomas Kearney in Knocktopher, Kilkenny aged 81 and living with his unmarried son Patrick which could well be him.  We would love to find out if James had other brothers and sisters and see if we can indeed add to our family line. Any help would be greatly appreciated, if you can point us in the right direction where we might find some information regarding James or even better his father Thomas Kearney.

thanks for your time and efforts in anticipation

regards

Robyn Kearney

Macroom RC parish is in the Diocese of Cloyne and those records are on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. I searched for a James Kearney with father Thomas for a 10 year period around 1846 with no record. I also searched for a Thomas Kearney for a ten year period around 1820 and there were about seven records but none in Macroom.

On July 8th the National Library of Ireland will be placing all RC parish registers online for free searching. Below is a list of records that will be available. Possibly the name was spelled differently ( I did search Carney) on the register or maybe they were married in another parish whcih does not have records that go back that far.

The 1901 census record that you found in Co. Kilkenny would not be your ancestors. That Thomas was born in Co. Kilkenny and your Thomas was born in Co. Cork.

    Questions?
