Hi,

I am hoping to find out more about my ancestors from Cork and would be grateful to anyone who can help me with information.

What I know so far:

My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Wakefield and her parents were Mathew Wakefield and Alice Louisa Harris. Alice and Mathew were married at St Anne's Shandon in 1860 and her father was recorded as being Thomas Harris, Coastguard. After a lot of searching I am still unable to find anymore information about Thomas, Alice's birth or about her mother. I think that Mathew was son of "Stephen of the Constabulary" and Margaret but have not validated that information. Mathew was a carpenter and I know that he worked on the railways in Cork. Alice and Mathew are buried at St Lukes, Douglas, in Cork City.

Hoping for any help at all and willing to share all of the records that I have in my family tree,

  • Hi Michelle, www.nationalarchives.ie 1901 Census for Cork there are several entries for your surnames in Cork.
    Regarding Thomas Harris Coastguard have a look at the following site:
    http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/coastguards
    Another good site for the coastguards is Coastguards of Yesteryear - google the name of site.

    Thanks so much. I do have records of my Wakefield family in the Census returns however am hoping that more parish records become available online so that I can search further back. With regards Thomas Harris, the coastguards records do turn up employees under that name however I am struggling to connect to the correct Thomas as I have not been able to find a child Alice, or a location that is close to Cork. The search continues..

  • Michelle, when I scanned through the Coastguards as you say there were a few Thomas Harris. I seem to recall one being stationed in INCH which I think may be not far from Whitegate Co Cork. Maybe Alice hadnt been born when he was there.
