James Riley and Sara Carty were born in Ireland c. 1830. They were probably married in Ireland and then emigated. They settled in an area called Rigaud in County Vaudreuil, approximately 40 miles west of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As many as 40 - 50 Irish families settled in the area amongst French Canadian farmers for some unknown reason. My Riley family remained in the area for approximately 100 years and some others moved on. Some other names from the area and in my family are Barry, Berry, Kavanagh, Cregan, Hynes, Leddy, Hartigan and Hynes. There are probably others that I havent realized yet. I have been trying to use land records to trace the family but so far have been unsuccessful. Family lore says the Rileys were from County Cork and other family members were from Tipperary and Wicklow but I have been unable to prove any of this. I realize that the time frame is very early but I thought I would give this a try. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

My Great Uncle,Thomas Hartigan had an adopted son who moved from Placentia, Newfoundland, Canada to Quebec, Canada in the late 1800's. Never knew that side of the family though I attempted to reach out to a Hartigan descendant about 2000. Never knew why he moved to Quebec but in the 1600's and 1700's Placentia was primarily a French community leading me to believe he married a French woman. In the late 1700's to early 1800's the Irish moved in because of the plentiful cod fish off the coasts of Canada. Maybe another link to your genealogy quest. David Hartigan
Hartigans of Newfoundland

Hi David,
I just found your post today. There was a Sara Riley who married a John Hartigan, son of Thomas Hartigan and Sarah Murphy, in 1892. They both lived in Montreal but married in Rigaud because their families lived in that area. His family lived just across the border in Ontario. They had at least two children, Mary Eveline Sarah, born in 1893 and John Thomas James born in 1896. In the 1901 census Thomas was living with my Riley family (Riley was spelled incorrectly) as a son. It should have been grandson I think. In the 1911 census, both children were living in Montreal with an aunt and uncle. There was no mention of any Hartigans from Newfoundland, just Ireland.
