I know that my father's family emigrated to NY in 1848 on the Franconia. William Lennon was the father and the Catherine Lennon the mother of the six children who also emigrated on that ship. They were last listed as living in Derry and departed from Glasgow I believe. Martin Lennon, my great grandfather was 19 at the time. They traveled in steerage as did most and were cabinetmakers. I have no idea whether they had lived in another part of Ireland prior to leaving.

My other side was the Flynns and I have traced them back to Broadford, County Kildare. James Flynn and his wife Anne Kennedy left Ireland in 1865 and went to Queensland Australia. I have been both to Australia where I found his grave and to Broadford where I got copies of the baptismal certificates of all the Flynn children. I never did find any direct relatives in either place.I believe that James and Anne left from Liverpool and were a newly married couple. They went on to also have six children and my grandfather James was the grandson of the first James.

I would be interested to hear from or about any kinship ties to either family. We have visited Ireland four times, but have not been north to trace the Lennons. Thank you

  • I have not been on the site again until today so I must really apologize. My younger brother ran in to a Lennon in Crotia and unfortunately even though they shared the same first and last name we found our families were from different ancestors. It just shows me this may be harder to trace than the Flynns whom I was able to trace back to the home village in Ireland.

I do not know if this family always lived in Derry or had moved there before leaving for the States. I will be in Ireland next month and am going to Derry as one stop. I am not sure how much time there will be for research, but it would be fun to get some more clues. My grandfather, the son of Martin actually had a first family before he married my grandmother so there are still relatives in the States I have not identified as well.

I have been to Australia where the Flynns emigrated, but never found any living relatives in Queensland nor in the Village of Broadford in County Kildare.I did locate the daughters of my mother's half sister in Sydney N.S.W., but no Flynns.

Thanks for your response and I hope you check more frequently than I.

  • Dear Clbarnhart:

Many thanks for your update and letting us know of your upcoming trip.

If you do have any opportunityy to research, you should definitely consider making a stop to PRONI, the Public Records office in Belfast.  It is located in the Titanic Quarter and is an excellent resource for family research.

If we can be of any assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
