Hi there I'm compling a family tree and have just found out that my great great grandparents were married in Derry/Londonderry in 1881. Their names were William Lynch and Margaret Jane Sargent. William's dad (Edward Lynch)  is listed as a shoemaker and Margaret's dad (Henry Sargent) as a tailor.

I think they had one or two children before moving to Glasgow, Scotland where they had several more children (Elenor, Henry, John, Mary and my great gran Sarah). At that time William Lynch was working as a police constable in the Glasgow Police.

I know it's a long shot but was wondering if anyone had any information about the Lynch or Sargent families from this time or even a suggestion on how to find out more information? Thanks in advance for any info or suggestions xxx

  • William Lynch’s marriage to Margaret Sargent was registered in Londonderry on 1.6.1881. The only child to parents of those surnames born in that general area that I could find was William Lynch b 19.8.1883 in Magherafelt, Co. Londonderry. You can view the certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

(You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 to a view a certificate).

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which should be on the certificate, (unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

Here’s a possible census entry for Margaret’s father:

Draperstown is very close to Magherafelt.

    He seems to have remarried:

Marriage to Mary Stewart registered in Magherafelt on 6.2.1902 (indexed under Sergent).

Possible death for Henry Sargent registered Magherafelt 14.5.1917 aged 78.

I noticed this Edward Lynch, shoemaker, in Co Tyrone in 1901 but I can’t say whether he’s William’s son. More research would be required to find out.
