Thank you for this message board. I am researching my 2nd great grandparents from Dublin. Arthur Burns born 1855 married Elizabeth (Bessie) Devaney born in 1856.  They left Dublin and ended up in Lancashire England in 1861 and on to Scotland by 1881. Arthur Burn's parents were John Burns (b. 1799) from Dublin and Annie Oswald (b. 1811) from Dublin.

Elizabeth Devaney's parents were Philip Devaney (1820) and Elizabeth McCluskey (1835) from Dublin.

Thank you very much, Barbara

The census is attached

  • I've not been able to locate any promising leads on Arthur & Elizabeth so far, several Arthur Byrne baptisms around the right timeframe, all RC, in Dublin City, but none with matching parents  - do you have any additional information that might help the search ?

e.g. denomination of this Burns & Deveany families, occupations for John Burns and Philip Deveney, or any details on where in Co. Dublin or Dublin city they originated...

Thank you very much for the reply. I will try and fill in some blanks. I think my 3rd great grandfather John Burns left Dublin with his family due to the potato famine. The earlist I can find them is in the 1861 census. John and Ann Burns with 5 children living in Manchester. John (age 62) is a cabinet maker, his wife Ann (age 50) a dressmaker. Their daughter Mary (age 23) is a dressmaker. The other children are Sarah, June, John J. and Arthur (age 6) my 2nd great grandfather. The census says they were all born in Dublin.

Arthur Burns, my 2nd great grandfather later became a tailor in Scotland. That might be a clue. They seemed to be associated with dressmaking and upholstery.

I don't know much more. Hit a brickwall when trying to find them in Dublin.

    Thank you very much, Barbara

  • Unfortunately still nothing promising showing up - and no baptisms for any of the children so far .... I suspect this family were non-Catholic, possibly Church of Ireland or Presbyterian ?

The complication if the family are non-Catholic is that mother's maiden surname is not usually shown on baptisms, which will make them much harder to spot, and 'Dublin' can refer to the City, suburbs or County so covers quite a few parishes. Even though many church records have been made available on line over the last few years e.g. IrishGenealogy (free), the Catholic Records on NLI (also free) and searchableCatholic transcripts on Ancestry & FMP, not as many for Church of Ireland parishes outside the city and very few for other denominations on RootsIreland.

What denomination of Church did Arthur and his siblings marry in ?

Burns can be a variant of Byrne, which is a very common surname, but the two surnames that stand out in this case are McCluskey and the rare Oswald. There are a few Oswald records mentioned in the Dublin City records, but nothing that I could locate for a possible marriage or baptism for Ellen.

The surnames sound to me like there may be an Ulster origin and both McCluskey and Oswald are more likely to be found in Ulster counties in the 1850s, Co. Derry/Londonderry for McCluskey and Co. Down for Oswald, and similarly for Burns, if you only search for that exact spelling, with most in Co. Down followed by counties Armagh & Antrim.

I've had a scan though several 1850s Thom's directories to check for any John Burn's as a Cabinet maker or similar, the only close match in 1852 is for a John J. Byrne, cabinet maker at 6 Henry St., Dublin city. Based on this 1853 baptism this John Byrne was Catholic and married to Theresa. Directories usually only show the principle name for a business, so it's possible that your John Burns worked for one of the other Cabinetmaker businesses in the city.

  • Hi Barbara,

Like your other corespondent I too could not find anything on your Dublin Ancestory.Where did you get your information from. The Burns Surname is found a lot in Co Down,as is Oswald.I am wondering were your Ancestors of Scottish decent as a lot of Scots settled in the North of Ireland.Just a thought.

The 1861 census mentions the entire family,I am wondering why did Arthur come back to Dublin to get married?

    Regards,

    Kate.

  • Thank you very much, I really appreciate your input and ideas on surnames and locations.

My search started with my grandmother Annie Burns. As far as I knew she was Scottish and Presbyterian. Her father Philip Burns also Scottish and Presbyterian-he died in WW I.

Going back to Philip Burns parents Arthur and Elizabeth Devaney Burns. That's when I found the Irish connection. It is only in census records that I see Dublin and Ireland as place of birth. The 1861 census says Dublin, later census just say Ireland.

Just a few documents to go on. I wil attach below. This is going to be difficult! Thank you again, Barbara
