THOMAS  ROCHE

was born in the 1880's, in Harrods Cross; when he was quite young (12-14) he left home to join the Royal Navy. He later married Margarete O'Brien, in New York: they had 2 sons, Raymond and Edmund.

Thomas was the last of 13 children; his father worked on the canals. Any information about this family would make me so happy !

  • Thanks Roger but how can I get further information concerning my living family from Dublin? I live in France but do go to Ireland every 2 years. Could I get information from Rathmines library? Thanks again

  • Francine Maryanne:

Roche is a fairly common name. You can try the phone book http://www.eirphonebook.ie/  Use the Residential Tab.

  • Join and follow the St.Catherines parish district (where your Harolds Cross) and our member interest group here at Ireland Reachmay be available to assist you. Or there may also be others following the families you are researching or who may join.

  • Thanks for the information but I'm asking myself why not the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Harold's Cross Road, Co. Dublin?

  • Yes you may certainly want to determine what records still exist for the church of interest you mention, and or determine what RC churches were in Rathmines at the time . And those records may exist in various forms held by different careholders today. Then you will want to look at the original record by digital or from the caretaker, for both Thomas and other relatives.

Other records for your people from such eras were created and maintained by other administrative divisions. You may wish to seek relevant holdings for other aspects of your research. Particularly since you also know a location where they lived.

As for the interest groups here at Ireland Reaching Out, they are catagorized by civil parish district, One explaination can be found here:

    http://www.irelandxo.com/resources/what-parish

Harolds Cross area appears in notations on the edge and approximately within the St.Catherine's "parish" civil district. Boundaries and the importance of such parish district, townlands, wards, boroughs, "hundreds", glebes, barony, tithe lands, council holdings or other such past and modern urban divisions, have changed with significance over time and perhaps slightly shifting locations mapping over the years.

More information on St.Catherine's sub region of Dublin can be found here at within the IRO website:

    http://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/dublin/st-catherines/background

    http://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/dublin/st-catherines/local-resource/researchers-tools-and-web-links

maps from the time period and exact boundary lines may be harder to find, but have been seen elsewhere in various resources at differing levels of resolution and usefulness.

We hope this assists you in some way, and you are always welcome to continue with the Dublin message-boards or at the same time to "join" the St.Catherines district interest group herein by following with the website buttons process for messages or group support there also.

Perhaps as you continue your explorations you might like to write about your experiences and growing expertise on the history of Harold's Cross to share with others here working in that neighborhood or surnames as well.
