My ancestor Thomas Fahy from the parish of Ballymacward.

The family consisted of:

Parents:           John Fahy 1790-1841 & Honor nee Ruane 1790-1841

Children:          Thomas 1815, William 1817, Peter 1819, Edward 1820, James 1823, Timothy 1825.

Thomas Fahy married Catherine O’Neale/O’Neil around 1838, their first child Bridget born 1838.

The entire family above except for the parents emigrated to Australia.  The six brothers along with Thomas’s wife and child departed Liverpool, England aboard the ship “United Kingdom” on 25th May 1841 and arrived in Sydney, Australia 7th September 1841.

I have all the records from the Assisted Immigrants shipping/ Bounty Immigrants Arriving in NSW etc.

The Galway Emigrant Index 1828-1864 states:

FAHEY Thomas 1841 26 Ballymacward John / Honor (Rowan?) xx – both dead. Baptism certified. Wife Catherine, 21 on board. Ship = United Kingdom

FAHEY Catherine 1841 21 Ballymacward Owen O’Neale/Mary xx both alive. Baptism certified. Husband Thomas 26 on board. Ship = United Kingdom.

I have researched their lives here in Australia, which I must say is a story to be extremely proud of.

Unfortunately, what I don’t have is information about the family in Ireland. I am looking for any records to assist in correctly documenting their baptism, marriage and death of their parents and any relatives that may still be in the area.

I have been searching the new Catholic Parish Registers online, although I have found lots of Fahy surnames I haven’t found what I’m looking for as yet.

I first joined Ireland Reaching Out in November 2012, where I posted my research request, I never heard anything back.  I updated that again last year, still nothing.  I now see this is a very popular and resourceful site for many people and I notice people posting recently and receiving replies.  So I thought I would give it another go and maybe this time someone may be able to help me.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We are very sorry that you did not receive any replies to your previous postings. We strive to respond to all messages but some slip though the cracks.

One of the research constraints for you will be the lack of RC parish records prior to 1855 for Ballymacward and Clonkeen ( there are also records from 1841-1843). http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0326

I'm on vacation currently but maybe others will comment but I will try to get back to you in a week. Also, have you considered autosomal DNA testing.

I have been searching the registers and I did the autosomal DNA testing with FTDNA two years ago hoping to find a match with Irish connections.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Hope to talk again.

  • Hi Michelle

I am from the neighbouring parish of Menlough (civil parish Killascobe)

The surnames Fahy and Ryuane are quite common in the area and with the lack of records you will possibly not find what you hope for there

However as you did the FTDNA Family Finder I would suggest that you upload the raw test results onto the free site gedmatch.com and then post the gedmatch number

I have gedmatch numbers for several people whose ancestry is from the area and will then see where you may match

At this stage unfortunately despite the good information that you have its possibly not enough to make connections

  • Hi Martin

How good of you to reply with this helpful information.

I will definitely upload to Gedmatch.

Yes your probably right, I may not be able to find the records I'm looking for, but a DNA match would be something amazing.

I would like to say in regards to DNA our Irish ancestors definitely carried the sporting gene. It has graced almost every generation since with highly skilled sporting men and women. With quite a few representing and captaining this country in football (rugby league and rugby union).

    Thanks again for your reply.

  • Great Michelle

It takes about 10 minutes to load and then you will be assigned a number

It takes less than 48 hours to process to see all your matches but you can do a 1-1 before that

When you get the number please forward and I will see what 'jumps' out :)

    Take care

  • Hi Michelle!

Back from vacation and I see that Martin has assisted you. I did a one for one on Gedmatch with you but got no match. I also sent an e-mail to the parish liaison for Ballymacward to alert her to your message.

  • Hi Michelle

Sorry for delay in getting back to you

I hope that you were able to get the 1-Many and see some of your known connections

I was hoping that some names might pop up that could be mutually known but nothing yet

Unfortunately this message pop up won't let me show the generations chart when I did a 1-1 with you and  my aunt Kit #399145 - there were some that you both match but were matching for differernt reasons ie cousins of cousins

Will keep coming back to it in time to see if anything else pops up

    Hi Martin

I have been looking at the 1-Many and I see familiar names from my highest confirmed relationship matches on FTDNA.

There are a few unfamiliar names that I will endevour to look at closer, once I find my way around Gedmatch.

My next DNA group meeting is next week, so I will definitely get some pointers there and hopefully start contacting any new matches.

I'm sure that in time something will come up.

My family are holding the Fahey Family Reunion in October this year in my home town and I know they will be delighted that I have had a reply from Ireland Reaching Out.

Martin would you know the name of any cemeteries in the Ballymacward parish where my catholic ancestors may have been buried around the 1840's.

I have attached a photo that a relative sent me a few years ago claiming this was the Ballymacward cemetery.

Thanks again for helping it really means a lot.

  • Hi Michelle,

I too am a descendent of John Fahy and Honora Ruane, and am looking for more information about their Irish roots. How did you go? Have you progressed on the irish front?

My GG Grandfather was William Fahey, but I have quite a bit of information on all the 6 Fahey boys. I visited the Appin Historical Society, and they provided me with quite a bit of information.

I was disappointed to read that there was a Fahey Reunion in Oct, 2016. Anything that you can share on John and Honora, would be great.

    Thanks

    Catherine
