John Concannon and Bridget McCabe of New Aircourt, County Galway

Hi Jordan, Looking at your message about John Concannon and Bridget McCabe.It appears to me that they lived in the KILTORMER(Formerly known as NEWTOWNEYRE) district of East Galway.

Griffiths Valuation 1856 shows Three Concannon families in CLONTUSKERT Parish-Two in the Townland of Ballagh.Adjacent to Ballagh lies the Townland of Gortnahorna. Gortnahorna is divided into two sections. One is described as Gortnahorna(Clancarty)-Lord Clancarty was one local landlord.The other is designated Gortnahorna(Clanrickard)-- Lord Clanrickard was another major landlord in east Galway

There is no McCabe listed as resident in Clontuskert,however one John McCabe is listed as resident in AUGHRIM Village about Three miles west from Ballagh & Gortnahorna/Clanrickard,from which he may have moved prior to 1856..As Irish people in times past did not travel very far in search of a spouse,it seems likely that John and Bridget grew up very close to each other,probably less than a mile apart.

I looked at the civil death index records and there was no record in 1886 for an adult. I did find this record in 1885 in the Portumna registration district. Not sure if this is your John. You can get copies from the General Register office for around 4 euros. If you are interested, let me know and I can forward instructions.
