Hello Folks,

I have a quick question. I have been searching for my Joyce roots for awhile now, however, I found a link which may link me to Galway. I have found this link: http://166.78.104.135/Joyce/joycec.htm which provided some possible hints to my Irish origins.

The part I am interested in the most is this:

13. In 1621 (or 1629) son Patrick Joyce was born, wife Catherine.

14. In 1650 son Thomas Joyce was born in Galway.

15. In 1687 son Alexander Joyce was born.

Alexander also had a son named Alexander and Thomas according to this source. I have a paper trail here in VA where I can prove that I am linked Thomas and Alexander, but my concern is the accuary of Alexander born in 1687. Are there any records in Galway to prove or disprove this? My y-DNA is suggesting Ireland as a point of origin as well.

    I'm not aware of any church records for Co. Galway back to the late 1600s.

    Joyce is very much a Co. Galway name. Over 40% of the Joyce head of household records in the mid-19th century were in Co. Galway.

    Thanks for your answer. I appreciate it. Is it possible there was a Presbyterian community in Galway? In the colonies Alexander and Thomas were both Presbyterians.

  • I recall there was at one time, I need to look that up again, however, on the other hand I know that members of the church of England converted to Presbyterian In VA at this time. Any Church of England records from that time period still around?

  • Older records that survived in the Republic of Ireland are kept at the General Registry Office (GRO) in Ireland. If you need more information on what records are available, I would suggest contacting a researcher in Dublin where it is located. I can't remember who I used last time to ask for general information, however I always look to the Association of Professional Genealogist to find researchers. The website is www.apgen.org. Just search by country and it will list all researchers they have for Ireland. I'm giving you the link as well but I don't know if it will work - https://www.apgen.org/directory/search_results.html
