Roger,

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation record you found in response to Patricia's inquiry of October 2013 referred to my husband's great-grandfather, James Shields.  He and Bridget Corr were married in the Gort Parish Church in December 1853.  They lived on Church St. at the time of their marriage, then moved to Nun's Island Lane where they lived until at least 1867.  Their children, all born and baptizd in the Gort Parish Church, are: Patrick (1854, Thomas (1856) and John (1859).  The name was spelled Shiel in the Gort Parish Church records.  Thomas and Patrick emigrated to New York City in Nov. 1880.  Thomas married and lived there until his death in 1907.  No records found for Patrick after his arrival - he may have returned to Ireland.

We would welcome any suggestions re: 1) locating any siblings of James and Bridget;  2)  dates and places of birth and death for James and Bridget;  3)  James and Bridget's parents' names;  4)  burial places for any Shields family members.

We are planning a visit to Galway in 2016 and are hoping there may be some descendants of the Shiel/Shields family still living in that area.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Weclome to Ireland Reaching Out! Finding siblings or parents of James and Bridget may be difficult since the Gort RC records start around 1848.

On July 8th the National Library of Ireland is placing all RC parish registers online for free searching. Gort records are in the Diocese of Galway. See below for the records available. Perhaps going through the records you may find marriage records for siblings of the couple or perhaps baptismal records for children of siblings to James and Bridget.

Gort is part of three different civil parishes: Beagh, Kiltartan and Kilmacduagh. I located James Shields in the Kilmacduagh records on Nun's Island Lane as you metioned above.

I did look for civil death index records for James and Bridget in the Gort registration district but could not find any records.

I did not find any possible records in Gort in the 1901 census.

  • Roger,

Thank you for your help.  I look forward to checking the NLI records for Galway when they are released next week.
