Thomas Stack and Johanna Murphy are shown as the parents of Patrick Stack.  I can find no trace of Patrick born to these people.  How can I find out the 2nd Christian Names of the children of Thomas and Johanna?  It has been suggested that he used his 2nd christian name in Australia and his nickname was Paddy.

Paddy Stack lived in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia and is my great grandfather.   He arrived in 1876 I believe.  Is there anywhere one can check the ships records of Irish people who travelled to Australia which gives more information about their backgrounds, other than as a passenger on the ship?

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at www.irishgenealogy.ie and found a March 1. 1840 marriage between a Thomas Stack and Johanna Murphy in Ballybunion RC church which is the RC parish to the northwest of Listowel RC parish. There are numerous baptismal records on this site in Ballybunion to this couple but I did not find a Patrick. Here is a link to the parish register and you can scroll thru the register. I did not look at the register so possibly the records are in Latin and if you need help let me know.

In any event, there are so many records, I'm wondering if there were two Thomas Stack/Johanna Murphy couples in the parish. In fact, I found a Honora baptized in July 1848 and an Elizabeth baptized in November 1848. The only two boys were a Michael and Edward,

You will not find the second Christian names for these children unless the register has that info which is very rare in my experience.

If you have not used this site before and need assistance, let me know.

I don't think you will locate any Irish records of passengers leaving Ireland in the 1870s.

  • Hello from Maureen in Australia.

Yes, I have been through the Parish records and I agree I cannot find anything to do with a Patrick.

Your suggestion there may be 2 couples with the same surnames is possible though I have found none.

I have wondered if Patrick is illigitimate born of a relative and raised by Thomas and Johanna Stack of Ballybunion, but searching along those lines seems very daunting to me.  Initially I thought perhaps one of Johanna's sigblings but the families are all so large and not knowing the parentage of Johanna also makes it difficult to go down that avenue.

It has also been suggested that Patrick Stack may have taken the opportunity to change his name for some reason or perhaps it is a second christian name which he decided to use.  I do know he was nicknamed Paddy in Rockhampton, the Stack family place of residence.

I am caught between a rock and a hard place.  The Thomas Stack and Johanna Murphy names are all the evidence I have, thought his wife Catherine Costello also came from around the Listowel area.  I have found her parents.

Thank you very much for helping me.

  • Hi Maureen,

About what year was the Patrick Stack you’re looking for born? What about Catherine Costello? Do you know if either of them may have been in the USA at some point?

My 3rd great grandparents were Patrick Stack & Catherine (maiden name unknown). We believe Patrick was born around 1820 in Ireland and Catherine around 1833 in Ireland. We know they are in Illinois, USA around 1855-1860. We believe they had at least 4 children in the USA who all became orphans sometime between 1860-1865, probably closer to 1861. Patrick & Catherine disappear from records about the time the children become orphans. I’m interested if any of this lines up with your information.
