I am searching for information about my great-grandfather and great-grandmother.  His name is Thomas James Patton, born in County Donegal (Ballyshannon I believe) on December 27, 1844.  Also searching for his wife, Anne Jane Keys but I'm not certain where in Ireland she was born.

I believe Thomas James Patton's father was James Patton and his mother's maiden name was Ann Flood.

I believe Thomas James migrated to the USA in 1868 and Anne Jane Keys migrated in 1870.  They met in the USA.

My name is Thomas George Patton.  Any help would be most appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

FYI. You posted in the Ballyshannon Co. Kildare parish page but Ballyshannon in Donegal is not a parish. The town of Ballyshannon is actually in two civil parishes: Kilbarron and Inishmacsaint.I would go with Kilbarron which is the larger of the two parishes.

You don't mention the religious denomination. RC records don't begin until 1858-1859 but the C of I and Presbyterian records go back earlier. I did make a quick search on Roots Ireland with no success.

I also looked at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and there was a James Patten listed in Knader townland. Possibly he is connected to Thomas. Also, two Patton records in Tonregee townland.

  • Roger, thank you very much for such a quick posting.  This is my first venture outside of Ancestry.com and I'm totally unfamiliar with the geography of Ireland, a deficiency that I hope to correct in the not-too-distant future.  I believe Thomas James was Episcopalian as that was the religion of my family as far back as my grandfather, Thomas Flood Patton (his son) who was born in Phiiladelphia, PA, USA.

Thank you for the link.  I'll pursue it to see if anything pans out.

Should I re-post my original message in the parishes you mentioned?  I gather that this is designed for searches by parish rather than by county.  Until your response, I was unaware of civil parishes at all.  I thank you again for your guidance.

    Regards,

    Tom Patton

  • Tom:

I was born In Philadelphia also.

There is no need to repost your message in Kilbarron parish but you may want to "Join" the parish.

FYI. Ballyshannon is just across the border from Co. Sligo and is not far from the Belleek factory in Co. Fermanagh.

Let me know if you have further questions.

  • Small world...Thanks!  I stumbled into a posting looking for Thomas Patton (believe it or not) in Donegal Parish that may pan out.  He was in the 78th Regiment along with his brother, James.  They were born about the right time for James to have fathered my great grandfather, Thomas James.

    Thank again for your help,

    Tom
