I live in Australia and I have just written a book about the history of a small coastal town in south-eastern Australia.  The first landholder in that area was a man by the name of Patrick Coady Buckley.  His mother had been transported from Dublin to the colony of New South Wales in 1818 after stealing a plate from her employer.  Paatrick was born inside Newgate Prison Dublin while his mother was awaiting removal to the ship 'Canada' en route to Sydney.  She was a married lady by the name of Ellen/Eleanor Cody/Coady.  She had married Tobias Coady/Cody in Dublin in 1809 but upon arrival in New South Wales was matched with another convict Edmund Buckley and they were married.  Ellen's son Patrick then became known as Patrick Coady Buckley.  I am trying to find the movements of Patrick's real father, Tobias, left behind in Dublin when his wife and child were sent to Australia.  All I know about Tobias is that he was born in Kilkenny in the mid 1790's and married Ellen/Eleanor Collins in Dublin in 1809.  I understand that he emigrated to maybe Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island in Canada.  When young Patrick was in Australia and living with his mother and step-father he was well educated and learned to manage cattle.  He and his step-father obrtained land in south-eastern Australia.  Patrick became very rich.  He died unexpectedly in 1872, and hadn't arranged to draw up a will.  There was a worldwide search to find living relatives of Patrick who could share in his fortune.  The ensuing search and litigation took ten years after Patrick's death and ultimately nine first cousins were discovered.  They were living in Kilkenny, New York, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and one in Australia.  I am very keen to find records of each of these nine.  The cousin who lived in Kilkenny was Mary Coady, wife of John Coady.  Perhaps John Coady was a nephew of Tobias.  I wonder if this famous story is known to anyone in Kilkenny.  It appeared in many newspapers in many countries for quite a few years from 1874-1878.  I am keen to write another book purely about Patrick and his life as well as pre-birth and post-death.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You may want to try the main library in Co. Kilkenny and see if they can assist. There is also a Kilkenny Archaeological Society which is actually a historical society. See links below.

  • Hi,

Tobias Coady is the original member of a Coady family here in Prince Edward Island. I have not research this family to any degree, but here is a copy of his entry in the 1841 PEI census: http://bit.ly/2pXYe8e

    All the best,

  • Hello Jim,  thanks for your reply.  I think we may have corresponded before, not sure!  I have quite a bit of information about the PEI Coady's and I would sooooo love this to be the Tobias that I am researching.  However, it must be proved, as you would understand.  Over the past two years I have had contact with other descendants of the PEI Coady's but between us we just can't come up with the key to Tobias' origin.  In their tree they have him descending from Wexford.  I am more of the opinion that my Tobias came from Gowran, Kilkenny.  It's a tough one.  I'm feeling like a visit to Ireland is the next on my agenda as I'm sure there are more records which are not online.  You can appreciate that I'm depending greatly on the online records at this stage due to distance from where I live in Australia.  Would appreciate any more of your thoughts.  Thanks. Sue

  • Hi Susan,

I talked to Tobias Coady's great-great-grandson, and he assured me that their family lore has Tobias being from County Kilkenny.

  • Hello again Jim.  I would give anything for your Tobias to be my Tobias.  I wonder how much his great great grandson knows about the history of Tobias.  I have a document that states he came from Kilkenny.  I can send it if you want.  I have looked EVERYWHERE for his movements after the date of his wife's transportation to NSW in 1817.  Unfortunately the only inconsistency that I can find is that the PEI Tobias, according to various family trees that I have found, claim that he was born around 1795.  I know that my Tobias married Ellen Collins in Dublin in 1809, I have their marriage record, which would make his birth date improbable as he would have only been 14 years old.  I have a copy of a couple of obituaries from Tobias' children.  I'm assuming that you have no documentation of Tobias Snr's death????
