I have very little information on this branch of my tree.  My Great-Grandmother was Mary Theresa Donohue and she married John Whetham in New Jersey, USA in 1896.  Family lore says that Mary was an orphan and was sent to the USA as a child to possibly meet up with family there.  No one came for Mary and a local family took her in.  I recently obtained Mary and John's wedding certificate and it lists Mary's parents as William Donohue and N. Mulcare.  Mary listed her birth year as 1867.  That is all the information that I have.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • The only Mary Theresa..or Teresa Donohue I found for Irish births from 1864 to 1890 were the following..

    Name:Mary TERESA Donohue..Date of Registration:1871..Registration district:.Galway..Birth Country:Ireland.  Volume:14 Page:310.

The other was a Mary THERESA Donohue born in 1886..far too late to be your M T.

It might be worth your while to order a copy of the 1871 birth cert .It won't cost an arm and a leg..but you never know, it COULD be your M T.unless she arrived in the U.S. prior to 1871 !

    Just trying to help.

  • The Mary Teresa Donohue in 1871 had different parents. See transcription below. I searched on Roots Ireland and there were over 100 Mary Donohue baptismal records with a father named William, however, none of the records had a mother with the surname Mulcare.

You should consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Thank you, Patrick and Roger.  I had been at a total dead end with Mary until I received the copy of the marriage certificate.  It is difficult to read her mother's name, Mulcare is the best I have been able to make out.

In the 1900 US Census, Mary is shown as being born in June 1867 and that she arrived in the US in 1880.  I have not been able to find Mary in any Census records until the 1895 New Jersey Census.  She was living in Erskine, NJ in 1895.  I don't know where she entered the US or where she lived until 1895.

Thank you again for your help.

  • If you could scan the marriage certificate, we could look at it and see if we come up with a different surname.

  • I see N. Mulcare also. In addition to Roots I also looked on www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Co. Kerry, Dublin city and part of Co. Cork but did not find the record.

  • The only other bit of information that I have for Mary is that she listed her country of birth as "Irish Free State" in the 1930 US Census.  All prior census records show "Ireland".
