Anyone know of the McGuire/Flynn family - my great grandfather Bernard McGuire / Maguire was birn in 1867 in Longford and I've seen some parish records at Templemichael for Brigidam Flynn and Jacobi Maguire and wondering if these could be Bernard's parents who were James Maguire and Bridget Flynn and if Bernard had any siblings.  Finding it really difficult to trace the Irish ancestors.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Bernard had three older siblings Mary 1862 John 1863 Ann 1865  I also located his civil birth record.. See link below. You will have to sign-in to see the image. The father was a shoemaker in Longford Town.

Thank you very much Roger that is really helpful.  I don't know how you managed to find out about the siblings but that's wonderful.  Do you know of any ways of finding out the marriage of James/Bridget or their dates of birth?  I presume they were Roman Catholic?

Below is a transcription of the marriage record. I found the marriage record and the baptismal records on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. You can also search for the records on the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0146

Thank you very much for that - is there any way of finding out James MaGuire and Bridget Flynns birth dates/places , parents names and deaths?

I'm not sure how many records can be found before 1850,

    Many thanks Estelle

The records for the RC parish in Longford town go back to 1802  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0146   The problem you will have is that James Maguire/McGuire and Bridget Flynn are very common names so it will be hard to verify any records located.

You may want to get a short-term subscription to Roots Ireland to assist with your research

  • Thanks very much - I did suspect that and it's knowing for sure if they are actually my gt gt grandparents.  I do have an ancestry membership already and did look at the roots Ireland and did a search before subscribing but no records came up and a lot have been destroyed.

Thanks for all your help - I'll probably try a month option but also await any possible DNA matches off ancestry.  Do you know if you can obtain certificates say of birth and marriage?

  • Who are you looking for specifically. Some of the records are online, others are not.

It was the Birth/deathof James Maguire who married Bridget Flynn and also Bridget Flynn - their son was born in Longford in 1867 - both had died by the time Bernard got married in 1892 in Scotland.

I searched www.irishgenealogy.ie                      For deaths prior to 1891  you only get an index record. I did not see a record for either Bernard or Bridget. so my guess is that they died in Scotland.
