I am searching for a marriage record for Thomas and Elizabeth Campbell, parents of Robert, born July 3rd 1825. They belonged to the Church of Ireland. Is there any information out there for Thomas, his birthplace, parents, trade and places lived?

Thank you,

Jane Campbell

  • Hi Jane

I see on your earlier post you refer to Elizabeth as possibly a nee Campbell but I think you mean that Campbell is her husband's name and therefore the family name of her son Robert Campbell? There is a marriage for an Elizabeth Jones and a Thomas Campbell in the parish of Templemichael, Co. Longford on 4th July 1824 and this would fit with Robert year of birth approximately. The couple were Church of Ireland and Elizabeth was from the townland of Clongish Killoe. Neither set of parents is recorded.

Children of this couple included Margaret (1826), Ann (1828) and William (1830) but no mention of Robert so perhaps throwing up more questions than answers.

  • PS Thomas is recorded on Margaret's baptism record as a Steward and on the latter two as a farmer (assuming the above baptisms are relevant to your search).

Elizabeth Francis (age 34) visited my great great grandfather Robert Campbell in 1861 in Hamilton, Ontario. In 1851, William Francis (age 7) visited my great great grandfather. Eliza Jones of Clongish who married Thomas Campbell is a different Elizabeth. This is why I am wondering if the Francis' family had a Campbell connection.

  • Hi Jane

I see the Col has replied to this in some way HERE

I couldn't see any Campbell-Francis marriage for Longford or surrounding areas despite the fact that many parishes in Longford have surviving marriage records from the 1820s and 1830s, perhaps they were married in a parish where did not start until later on. I see that Elizabeth's surname is not recorded on Robert's baptism but he was baptised in Killaloe as you know on 4th August 1825 (born 3rd July 1825).

I think that the best thing you can do is start with Robert in Ontario and find out his birth/baptism details and if possible those of his parents and their siblings. In this way, sponsors/godparents and witnesses at weddings will become known to you and any with a Francis-Campbell with point you in the direction of a family connection. Don't forget to include a search of local newspapers or obituaries, sometimes the latter for example, list the names and those attending funerals and their connection to the deceased. This is an easier process that trying to make a connection through Elizabeth/William - start with what you know and work back.

  • To Clare Doyle,

Thank you for your suggestions re: our search for Elizabeth Francis. She was 34 and married according to the  1861 census here. Elizabeth and Robert (my great great grand father) were about the same age. She was not his mother. Possibly they were cousins but in any event Elizabeth would have had a different maiden name. Could you look for any marriage record for the Francis Family in Ireland in the 1840's-1850's.

    Good Luck.

  • Hi Jane

If you take out a 24 hour subscription to rootsireland.ie you will see that there are 146 marriage records for the surname Francis between 1840-1860. Given what you know you can see if you could narrow things down a bit more.
