Good afternoon:

I am looking for family information for John Grady and Bridget Reilly:

John Grady, born 20 Jun 1868 and baptized 21 Jun 1868 Kilgeever, Emigrated to Boston Massachusetts USA in June 1890
Father: John Grady (b ABT 1836)   Mother: Bridget Scanlon (Scanlan) (b ABT 1841) these names are listed on Marriage and Death records and Baptism record
John Grady married Bridget Reilly: 8 May 1902 in Clinton Massachusetts
Wife: Bridget Reilly (Riley) (b ABT 1871) emigrated and settled in Clinton, Massachusetts
Father: Patrick Reilly (Riley)  Mother: Bridget (Ellen ?) Boyle  these names are listed on marriage record

John Grady had a sister:
Mary Grady (b ABT 1858)  married in Clinton, Massachusetts on 4 May 1882 to James Freel (Friel, Frehill) (b ABT 1859)

Possible brother:
Peter Grady mentioned on 1900 Federal Census in Clinton, MA as a boarder in the home of James and Mary Freel.

Based on DNA testing there is a strong possibility that the older John Grady (b ABT 1836) may have had a brother Malachi Grady who emigrated to the USA and settled in Clinton, Massachusetts.

I have been working on making verified connections with this line of my Father's family but have not been able to find any additional information confirming the connections and relatives in Ireland including the connection to Malachi Grady or the family of John Grady and Bridget Scanlon who most likely lived in Tully, County Mayo, when their son John left for the USA in 1890 (Tully is listed on naturalization papers)

Thank you for any help or guidance you may have.

We are looking forward to finding solid family connections

Best,  Sean

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked on Roots Ireland in the Kilgeever RC parish records and found five possible siblings to John Mary 1850 William 1865 Owen 1870 Patrick 1872 Anne 1876 I searched for Grady children with father John and mother with surname Scanlon. The Mary record requires more analysis. Why was there a 15 year gap between Mary and William?

The Kilgeever records start in early 1850 so you won't find records for the parents. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1068

Also below is a possible record for Bridget Reilly in 1867. The civil record has this family living in Carrowslattery townland which is in Robeen civil parish.

  • Good evening Roger,

Thank you very much for taking a look and helping me out.

Unfortunately, the family information has not been passed down.  I have been able to piece together the current information from what names my father can remember as familiar and the document finds I have mentioned.   Through AncestryDNA I have met a few other Grady family members but we have not yet found the tree connection of her Great Grandfather Malachi Grady and my Grady line.  As you can tell, it gets very fuzzy beyond what I have.  My hope is to find some small piece of information, possibly someone related that can help connect what few dots I have.

Again, thank you.  I will keep reviewing your notes.

    Best,

    Sean

  • Sean:

There is a volunteer run DNA site called gedmatch www.gedmatch.com  You can upload your raw DNA from Ancestry to Gedmatch and see if you match someone who tested with another DNA company and also uploaded their data to Gedmatch. Very good analytical tools also.

  • Hi Roger,

I looked back on my notes regarding Mary Grady.  Based on her Marriage record in 1882 she is listed as 22 years of old  which would place here birth year at 1860 even though the baptizim record I have attached to her file lists 1850 with father and mother correct.  The 1900 Fed Census for Clinton, MA lists her birth year as Feb 1858.

    This one is confusing.

    Thank you for your help.

  • My grandfather, Peter Joseph Grady, was Mary Grady's sister.  He emigrated to Boston and Clinton on the Pavonia in 1897. He was born about 1864. He lived in Boston and married Annie Needham. They had three children, John Francis (my father), Robert Emmet and Vincent (who died young).  Annie died, and Peter married Bridget McGovern (from Cavan, I think).  I can remember my parents speaking of Barberas.

  • Hello MGrady-

We must be cousins.  Mary Grady was the older sister of John Grady my great-grandfather and I saw the census record where Peter Grady was living with Mary and James Freel.  Was Peter the youngest of the Gradys?  I have his birth year estimated at 1874.

Do you have a family tree on Ancestry.com?  I am very interested in finding out more of the Grady family line.  I have very little information of the family from Ireland. There are a large number of Gradys that have come through Clinton, MA and I have met a few through AncestryDNA and we ahve been working together to find the family tree connection to go along with the DNA and known cousins.

I would very much like to connect and share family history information. I grew up outside of Boston, MA and now live outside of Salt Lake City.

This obituary lists a few nephews on John and Bridget Grady.  Do the names sound familar?

  • Hello Sean--At the funeral--John Francis Grady was my father; Robert his brother.  Catherine Grady was my godmother.  I didn't know her, but I think my parents always exchanged Christmas cards.  Before he was married, my grandfather lived on Cambridge Street, Boston and Fruit Street in the West End of Boston (where Mass General is now).

Sometime back, I had contacted the Clinton Town Clerk, who was a Freel, and was living at the house on Orange Street where my grandfather had been a boarder.

    Hi Mary,

Great to make the connection.  I am not sure how to connet with you directly without sharing my email address publicly (I will figure that out) to continue our conversation.

Do you have / know of any information or family details of your grandfather Peter Grady?

Where his family lived in Ireland? I have seen Tully, County Mayo, Ireland on some documents.

Where he was born?  When he was born (I have 19 Jan 1874)? His other family members (Parents and Siblings), I think I have several of them? The date and place he died?

I do not have much detail on the Grady family past my Great Grandfather John Grady, Peter's brother. I have been digging and tracking down everything I can to piece the information together.

I have that their parents were John Grady (born about 1836) and Bridget Scanlon (Scanlan -sp?) (born about 1841)

If you have an Ancestry.com account you can see my family tree starting with John Grady (Mary, John and Peter's father):

  • Hi Sean

My maiden name is O'Grady but it was Grady up until my generation when we put back the 'O'. Anyways I know where Tully is and it's only a mile or so from Furgill where I was born. I will do my DNA to see have we a match. Alot of emigration back then and very little records kept. My own Grandfather's sister Mary Grady emigrated to Boston around then and no contact at all with the cousins. We know nothing about them not even the surname. DNA is probably the best option here. Also if you had the sponsers for the child they were usually a brother, sister of the parents.

I am fairly sure there are still Grady's in Tully. I live the other side of the country now but will keep updating you should I get any other information. First thing I will be doing is the DNA. I have the kit got.

    Regards

    Betty Farrelly (nee O'Grady)

  • Hi Sean, I'm pretty sure we are related. John Grady is my Great Grandfather. His son, Owen Grady ( born 1869) is my Grandfather. Owen's daughter, Mary Grady (born 1905) is my Mother. My GGF, John, ( born 1836) was married to my GGM,Bridget Scanlon ( born 1841). Owen Grady was married to my GM, Mary Kitredge (Kitterick) on the 07 of February 1899. My mother, Mary Grady, was born in Tully, Kilgeever, District of Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, Ireland. My mother came to the U.S. and married and raised a family here.

     think we may be cousins.
