Hi,

I am having difficulty finding the specific location in Mayo that my ancestors are from.

I purchased all the relevant records from Scotalnds People that I could find, and am now trying to crack the Irish records with no luck so far.

I am researching:

Catherine Farrell  based on Scottish documents, she was born about 1842 in Mayo (one of her census records lists Mayo). By 1859 she is getting married in Edinburgh. In the 1861 census she is listed as a former servant. I have all the records following her marriage, but none beforehand.

Catherine's father:

Thomas Farrel listed as: labourer, deceased, on Catherine's marriage record in 1859. I could not find the death in Scottish records.

Catherine's mother:

Catherine Turpie / Torpie / Tarpy  listed in her daughter's various Scottish census records as being born in Ireland anywhere between 1785 - 1797, listed in her death record (1874 Edinburgh) as being "about 85" with no recorded name for her mother. Her father: Thomas Turpie, ____ labourer.

Any advice or information would be much apprecaited.

Thank you!

The best I can do is point you to East Mayo. The name Tarpy/Tarpey/Torpy/Torpey is found in Kilbeagh (Charlestown), Kilmovee, Annagh, Bekan, Aghamore and Kilcolman parishes in east Mayo. This is based on the surname data in the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Mayo.

Farrell was more prevalent to the west and southwest of Mayo but there were Farrells, Ferralls and O'Farrells in the parishes I noted above. You can go to either www.askaboutireland.ie or www.rootsireland.ie to search the Griffiths. Roots is free to search Griffiths after you register. AskAbout Ireland is free.

Unfortunately, most RC records in the parishes noted start in the 1840s and 1850s with Bekan (1832) being the exception.
