Hi,

I'm looking for information about Jeremiah 'Darby' Whelan. He was a convict who I believe was born in about 1816 in Offaly (King's).

The Ireland-Australia convict transportation records note the following:

Surname: WHELAN; First name: DARBY;

Sex: M; Age: 25; Place of trial: King's Co; Date of trial: 1840;

Description of crime: Abduction; Sentence: Death commuted to T life then to T 14 years;

Record reference code: TR 3, p 101

Darby left on the second voyage of the ‘Egyptian’. Departed Dublin on 19 August 1840 and arrived in Hobart on 12 December 1840.

I’m interested in any information regarding where he was born / his family / court records.

Thanks

    Have you already checked out rootisireland.ie? There is a baptism there for a Jeremiah Whelan in Co. Kilkenny on 10th Sept 1814. There is no real way of knowing for sure if this is relevant to your search though as we would need a parish/county at the very least or parent/parent's names. Was Darby married before transportation or did he have siblings that you know of? You could have a look on rootsireland and see if there are siblings. Do the names of the sponsors ring any bells in terms of your family tree - George Hudson and Margaret Corigan?

    You can find out more about transportation and related records at the National Archives Website
