Living in Scotland I am James Stapleton (fifth previous father/grandfathers etc named James) and am trying to trace Great Great Grandfather who was named James Stapleton b. circa 1818 and died 1874 in Manchester, and his father Thomas Stapleton who were both from Ireland and James in particular was from the Roscommon area. James was possibly married to a Margaret Moran b. circa 1813 and died 1868.

Any information would be gratefully received.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched Roots Ireland from 1813-1823 in Co. Roscommon for a baptismal record for James and got no record. Also did a marriage search and did not find a Stapleton/Moran marriage record. Many churches do not have records back to these dates.

I did look on the Tithe listings and found a Thomas Stapleton in 1842 in Killummod civil parish. No idea if this is your ancestor and he may have been deceased by 1842 so consider this record a "soft" lead.

  • Roger,

many thanks. The birth date may be wrong, possibly 1811, as I the ages for the family vary when they appear in the English census by a few years, also the 1841 register apparently rounded to the nearest 5!!!
