My interest is with Benjamin Gibson who lived in Derrinsalla. He is listed in the 1824 Irish Tithe Applotment Books  I belive he had a son, Samuel Gibson, who emigrated to Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada, most likely around 1830-1832.  I think this because Samuel begins to appear on BMD records for Wellington around that time.  Surnames that appear as witnesses and sponsors along with the Gibsons in Wellington during the 1830's and 1840's are Neaton, Coonan, Kennedy and Downey.  The Gibson clan of Derrinsalla all had children named, Benjamin, Samuel, John, James, Ellen, Mary and Catherine, names which pertpetuate in Samuel Gibson's family in Canada. Jeremiah Coonan and wife Catherine Kennedy, Francis Neaton, and Sarah Kennedy all seem to be linked to the Gibsons.  An Ellen Gibson, daughter of John Gibson and Elizabeth Kennedy also emigrated to Wellington at a later date and married Denis Donovan in 1850. The marriage records states she was from Dorrha.  Thomas Corcoran married Sarah Kennedy in Wellington, he was from the parish of Durrow which I think is Dorrha.  Another connection Samuel Gibson has to Dorrha is Margaret Kennedy.  The marriage occured in 1849 in Ontario and records her parents as Michael Kennedy and Catherine Gibson from Dhirra, Tipperary, I think this is Dorrha.  Records don't begin for Dorrha until 1829 so I'm unable to find Samuel's birth or baptism.  Can anyone be of help.  Many thanks, Dorothy dcpayne@shaw.ca

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I know you posted in Dorrha parish on February 3rd. I will e-mail our parish liaison for Lorrha and alert him to your message. As you indicated the RC records for Lorrha Doorha parish do not start until late 1829.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Hi Roger, many thanks for the reply.  I contacted my fellow researcher, Jeri Lunney, about autosomal DNA and she said  " I think it is what both my Gibson cousin and I have done through familytreedna."   Gibson is the maiden name of Jeri's mother.

    Dorothy:

Yes the Family Tree DNA test would be autosomal. I assume you have looked at your close matches and e-mailed them to see where you may be connected.
