Planning to visit Ireland for the first time in the summer of 2016. I would like to visit areas, towns where my ancestors lived. I'am of course familiar with the origins of the O'Neill name but would like to narrow it to my specific lineage. I believe the first of our family to come to America was Joseph Francis O'Neal. He was born in 1804 and  supposedly was born in Tyrone, Ulster but I have been unable to confirm that. Any help locating my direct family line would be greatly appreciated.

No luck in the Tithe Applotments or early Irish Censuses but PRONI (free at http://www.proni.gov.uk/) has 28 O'Neals in Tyrone in the 1766 Religious Census. (Select Name Search and enter O'Neal location Tyrone).

  • Hi,

I have found some O'Neills in the National Library Ireland Catholic Parish records Dundalk. There are a few others scattered around the Armagh section of this site. Just google it. I have found it quite easy to use as there is a place to put in the approx year if you know it so you do not have to scroll through all records, although I have as it is amazing the other names one finds.

My O'Neills are Margaret nee Grant and James O'Neill and daugheter Margaret Grant O'Neill.
