I am trying to find out more about my grandparents Michael Grogan and Catherine Beirne or O'Beirne and possibly know as Kate who were married on 26th December 1881at Bekan Parish Co Mayo and would assume they were born around 1860. They at some point moved to Co Tyrone. Michael was a sergeant in the R.I.C. From the 1901 census I have the names of their eight children who were James, Margaret, Annie, Eugene(my grandfather)  Michael, John, Kathleen, and Patrick(who went to live in America) I would love to know more about my ancestors and if anyone has any information about the Grogan family I would love to hear from them. I have a copy of my grandfathers Baptism record, his full name was Eugene Roland Grogan and is dated 2/11/1893, the address given is Gortgonis. He married Fanny Lynch I believe in 1913.

Many Thanks

Frances

  • Hi Frances,

Thanks again for your message. I have already responded to you on the Co. Cavan page. There I gave some resources and websites which you may find useful.

I see you have added a bit more information here about Michael's career in the R.I.C. Excellent RIC personnel records were kept from 1816. These can be found at the UK National Archives here:

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/royal-irish-constabulary.htm

There are microfilm copies at the National Archives of Ireland, The Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). For each recruit it includes a brief service record, date of marriage and wife's native county, and the name of the individual who recommended him.

There is a book by Jim Herlihy called, The Royal Irish Constabulary: a complete alphabetical list of officers and men, 1816-1922, 1999. This supplies the Service Number needed to use the Registers quickly and easily.

Also worth checking at the UK National Archives is PMG 48: 'Pensions and allowances to officers, men and staff of the Royal Irish Constabulary and to their widows and children'. This dates from the 1870s and usually gives the address of the recipient.

You can find information regarding the Garda here: http://www.policehistory.com/museum.html

I hope that this is helpful. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Frances,

I've just made the connection with Sergeant Rowland Grogan MM and this thread. Up until today, we've had very little details.

I'll update the details by the end of the day on the Dungannon War Dead website.
