My great Grandfather was a Patrick Bolger born 1853. His father was Bernard Bolger born around 1830 his trade was a joiner. Bernards wifes name was Bridget and she is entered in the 1871 Liverpool census with her son Partick. (see attached census form)

The 1871 census form states they were from either County Waterford or Wexford it's difficult to see the faded entry, but family stories passed down said they come from Wexford. I have attached two documents if anyone can shed on any light on them It would be much appreciated.

Best Regards Kenny O'Connell.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The record below is a good possibility. Bryan and Bernard were interchangeable.

  • Hi Roger, thanks you very much for the information. I suppose it's impossible to say for certain that this is my family, but I agree with you it certainly could be. Do you know of any other avenues I could go down, migration, BMD records as I think Bernarddied in Ireland as there is no record of him in the UK. Thanks again for your help, Kenny O'Connell.

  • Kenny:

I looked at the civil death index records and the only record I located.had an 1814 birth (based on what the informant provided). I know that 1814 is not close to 1830.

    Hi Roger,

You helped me a while back with my Bolger family - I have attached the record you sent me for you to view. I have spoken to older relatives who remember the name Devereux in the family this leads me to believe these are my ancestor. I just wanted to ask you about the baptism record.

Bridget is Bernards wife - so why is she listed as Devereux and not Bolger?

    Thanks again, Kenny O'Connell

  • Hi Kenny!

In my experience, looking at thousands of RC baptismal records from the 19th century, the maiden surname of the mother was shown in about 85-90% of baptismal records. The remaining records had the married name of the mother. All civil birth records which started in 1864 show the married name and the maiden name of the mother.
