I am searching for information on ancestors of James and Margaret Hopkins.  James was born in Ireland (I suspect County Wicklow) in 1807 and listed himself as Church of Ireland in an 1851 Canadian census.  He and Margaret emigrated to Canada through Montreal sometime in the 1830s.  They ox-carted to the London-St. Thomas area in Ontario and farmed a 100 acre area.  Verbal indications point to them travelling from Ireland to Canada with at least one child. They had eight children.

Mary, b. Feb. 5 1833; Sarah Jane, b. Aug. 1, 1834; Julianne, b. Mar.17, 1836; Jemima, b. Jun 5, 1837; Charles Edward, b. Mar. 15 1839; Benjemin, b. Aug. 9, 1841; Margaret,b. Jun 9, 1844; John, b. Aug 9, 1846.

I recently had DNA testing and discovered an American and Canadian male Hopkins contact.  From those contacts, it is believed that James Hopkins had a brother Richard Hopkins b. 1811.  As well, it is believed that the family originated from a Townland south of Dublin called Corndog which is supposed to be southeast of the village of Moyne.

I will be arriving in Dublin September 3 and intend to rent a car and drive to the Glendalough area where i have a reservation for 3 nights before heading back to Dublin.  I then will be heading for London on September 8.

I would appreciate any information on the above search for my Irish roots.

  • Hello John,

In order to find a baptismal record for James Hopkins we will need jto know at least one of his parent's name.  That name can usually be found on a marriage certificate, but as I don't know Margaret's surname then I can't search for a marriage record.  So to get Margarets name, you will have to apply over there for a birth/baptismal record for any of their children.  These records always state parent's names.

AS soon as you can give us Margaret's surname, please come back to us and we can search www.rootsireland.ie  and www.irishgenealogy.ie

Look forward to hearing from you soon,

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy
